The Kiwanis Cabin in Cedar Crest is a hidden gem worth exploring! The drive up from Albuquerque was manageable, though the 13-mile road had some icy and snowy patches, so take caution in winter. Once I arrived, parking was easy with a $5 fee per car, payable at a card station or via a cash envelope.
It was freezing and incredibly windy at the trailhead, so Iād recommend dressing in warm layers and bringing snacks and water. The hike to the cabin was relatively short but challenging due to icy and snowy patches along the trail. Without proper gear, it can be tricky to navigate without slipping. Also, be cautious on sections of the trail that are close to the edge without railings.
Reaching the top was well worth it! The views were absolutely breathtakingāI could see the Sandia Tram and Ten 3 from the cabin. The cabin itself is a marvel, rich in history and a unique structure to explore.
While the winter hike was an adventure, Iād love to return in the spring when the weather is milder. Itās a scenic and rewarding hike, perfect for anyone who enjoys stunning views and a bit of history. Definitely a must-see in the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIām not sure whoād be crazy enough to try and live in this cabin back in the day but hats off to them for doing it. The cabin is about a mile hike from the tram drop off and took us about 25 minutes each way so make sure youāve got enough time ti do this prior to the last tram pickup or itās going to be a long cold night in the mountains. Itās really neat to see how quickly the clouds roll in and out so donāt give up if you canāt see the views at first. You may just need to wait a few minutes for a break in the cloud cover. Thereās about a 300 ft. elevation change on this hime but it seems like all of it is in the last 1/8 mile of the hike. So itās a very pleasant hike until you get to the end and then youāll be huffing the...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA very popular depression-era CCC construction 3/4 mile south of the Sandia Crest parking area. A very easy day hike. Beautifully constructed of local stones, it used to have windows, a door, and a fireplace. Now it is a great place to hike, snowshoe, or cross country ski to and take photos. Gorgeous view of the Albuquerque valley. In the summer follow the Sandia Crest trail 130 from the parking area and/or meander a bit more on the nature trail. Multiple trails coming up from the Ellis trailhead, etc. In the winter make your own trail thru the snow. Note that there is a $3 fee/day for parking in the Sandia Crest...
