I had my 0.5 hp Gould pump let go that was bought at here back in 2003. Naturally, I called F. W. Webb so see if I get that pump again. They said, yes we have it in stock. I said great, I'll be down to pick it up. The reply was, no, we cannot sell the pump to you unless you are in the pump repair business. I responded with surprise emphasizing that I was without water on a cold winter day, and questioned in disbelief that they were refusing the sale. They confirmed that they would only sell the pump I needed to a pump repair company. I asked why. They said that it was to protect the trade.

So, I began to ponder on this situation. Despite having sufficient mechanical knowledge due to my education in the trades to undertake this plumbing project as a consumer and homeowner, I was to be forced into paying a pump specialist to come out and install the pump? Obviously, the cost of the problem would increase some 5X easily with that approach. I chose instead to purchase a comparable pump elsewhere from a company that would sell consumers and installed that with some extra pipe work.

I concluded that this practice was ill-conceived because not only did I not call a pump specialist that I did not need, F. W. Webb also missed out on the sale. In effect, you haven't protected anyone with this policy; you have simply driven customers away because you have chosen greed over decency. These types of business practices hurt us as Americans. They weaken our country by forcing consumers into situations that they could have otherwise avoided in their time of need. Furthermore, when it all caves in on you, don't come crying to us.
