This museum tells the incredible and important history of American Beach through the lives of those who had the passion to preserve it for generations to come. The new name is AL Lewis Museum at American Beach, FL. Their website and Facebook page list their current hours. As of this review they are open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, or by appointment if arranged in advance. We stayed an extra day to make it on a Friday morning and we were not disappointed! Hopefully with more support they will be able to offer more availability. This museum can be enjoyed between 1-3 hours and is well done with personal artifacts, up-to-date technology, and informative and engaging videos. The flow of the museum walks you through the lives of two individuals who are especially prominent. First is AL Lewis who was a part of the purchase of this area and founded an African American resort during the depression. In the following years it was utilized by so many when beaches were segregated. In AL Lewis's words, "Recreation and relaxation without humiliation." The perseverance and pioneering spirit of AL Lewis is evident through his personal correspondence and financial support to Mary McLeod Bethune. Flipping through their letters gives you a real sense of the struggle that Black Americans faced, and the grit required to overcome the challenges of racism. The next phase of the museum walks you through the life of his granddaughter MaVynee Oshun Betch, better known as "The Beach Lady." Through the videos and personal effects, you get to know a woman who had personality enough for ten lifetimes. Her love for this place and its history is evident in her determination to advocate for its preservation. During a time when many properties were being snatched up by developers, American Beach stayed true to the natural beauty that drew people here in the first place. MaVynne's relentless advocacy led to the beach's dune system being added to the National Park system. After a visit to the museum, you can take a short drive or walk over to see the tallest dune system for yourself. On the beach you can see the enormously popular "Evans Rendezvous" which has been acquired and projects for future rehabilitation are currently receiving funding. Nearby you can enjoy the beach for yourself at the well-maintained Burney Park. There is a place where you can drive onto the beach and set up for your beach day, or park in the large cement area by the bathrooms, showers, and walkway over the dune. It is more quiet, less crowded, and more sheltered from the wind than the beaches toward the north of the island. The only downside is there are not many places to eat nearby so make sure to grab a picnic lunch before you go. Enjoy stepping into history!

I have been wanting to visit this museum since I moved to Jacksonville almost 6 years ago but covid messed it all up. So being able to visit this past Sunday was a dream come true. I learned so much history about American Beach, how it started, AL Lewis' legacy and even MaVee who kept the legacy alive. Malik, Vonnie and Mariah were incredibly knowledgeable, friendly and they made us feel like family. I even got to meet Ms. Carol which was such an honor and she was so kind and humble. I'll be back and I'll be telling all of my friends to visit. I hope the museum continues to grow - I will say it feels like a small space but it has SO much information packed in. I LOVED my visit and will be back.

The museum is ran by lovely staff who are extremely knowledgeable of A.L. Lewis and the American Beach. The rich history and culture of the beach makes it a special place to all. The A.L. Lewis museum used to be named the American Beach Museum, but went through a name change , however it still captures a very important part of history that must be preserved. The Beach Lady’s hair was on display! Best piece of the museum. There were informative videos on tablets. I will definitely be going back to support!! **no photos or videos in the exhibit**

I stumbled upon this “GEM” this past weekend on a visit to American Beach. I went to American Beach specifically because of its historical significance in History. The museum was referenced on one of the many historical markers detailing the history of the preserved structures and I sought it out. The museum is small but packed with so much information. I could have never imagined the many connections between Black visionaries and leaders. Carol, the museum guide, was fantastic and provided additional information about American Beach and the families that lived and continue to live on the island. While there, I met Diane. Diane is the owner of American Beach Villas, a privately owned BLACK hotel on the island. Listen….DO NOT skip the museum when you visit American Beach. If your mind is not blown by the time you finish the exhibit, go back through AGAIN. Thank...

This lace is amazing. Black Americans, Celebrities, and Athletes. Be part of history. Your donations are needed. I spent part of the day here after touring with Ron Miller of Coastonetoursllc.com. I lived in the area 15 years ago and after this weekend, I am seriously considering coming back to the area. This community needs to be preserved. And, as a Black American, we owe tremendous gratitude to all of those who were involved in shaping this historic community, as well as thanking those who are working to keep the history alive. If you come to Jacsonville. VIsit American Beach, learn the history and, like me you may want to get involved. Wed control our destiny. We no longer have to sit and watch our assets disappear. We need to unite and fix our communities. God Bless you all! It is our...
