Fort Davis National Historic Site is a fascinating destination that takes you back to the days of the Old West. This well-preserved 19th-century military post, set against the stunning backdrop of the Davis Mountains, offers an immersive experience into the lives of the soldiers, Buffalo Soldiers, and civilians who once lived here.

Before starting your visit, stop by the visitor center to purchase your entry pass. The friendly and knowledgeable staff there will provide maps, helpful tips, and an overview of what to see. It's a small but important step that ensures the site's maintenance and preservation.

Once inside, you'll find restored buildings and engaging exhibits that bring history to life. Highlights include the officers' quarters, the hospital, and the parade ground. Informational signage throughout the site paints a vivid picture of daily life at the fort.

For nature enthusiasts, the hiking trails surrounding the fort offer a unique perspective. A short trail behind the site leads to breathtaking views of the entire area, showcasing why this location was so strategically important.

The combination of historical significance and natural beauty makes Fort Davis National Historic Site a must-visit in West Texas. Just don’t forget to stop at the visitor center for your pass—it’s a small price for a journey...

Would recommend we took a field trip there for J-ROTC and we had a blast and made a lot of memories . I love every part of this we hike a total of 14 miles during the trip . Things that i would recommend a Carmel bag (the backpacks with the water tobe thing)

Sun screen a lot of kids got sunscreen and I thought i wouldn't get burn because im Mexican and i was wrong i still got burned on my neck

Snacks you might get a little bit hungry

First aid kit you need one of these just in case are teacher almost got bit by a rattlesnake and luckily he didn't but if he did it would have been bad

WATER LOTS OF IT

(Clothes) .BOOTS like hiking boots or work boots i wouldn't recommend cowboy boots the trail will get slippery and if you're boots have steel toe or a toe protector even better i wish i had some of those

. JEANS i would recommend jeans there is 🌵 , thorn bushes , bugs , and rocks thes things will hurt be jeans will help you so these things don't hurt you as bad and trust me you don't want to fall with shorts on

OPTIONAL . Bring a hat it will help with the sun . walking sticks i had these and they helped so much trust me thay help .chapstick your lips might get...

Fort Davis National Historic Site is a fascinating place to spend a few hours learning about the history of the area and the challenges people faced as they traveled west along the old San Antonio-El Paso Road. As you wander around the Fort, it's evident how much effort the dedicated staff puts into preserving the historic structures scattered across the grounds. Informative plaques and displays are plentiful, providing rich historical context.

For hiking enthusiasts, there's a rewarding loop trail that starts from the Fort grounds and ascends the North Ridge, offering a fantastic overhead view of the area. The loop through Hospital Canyon is about 3.3 miles, making for a wonderful, meandering stroll. The beautifully maintained grounds are dotted with interesting tidbits of information, and the slight elevation gain during the climb is manageable if you take your time. The view from the top is definitely worth the effort!

A crucial tip: bring plenty of water! Don't underestimate the summer heat, even on a...
