Boynton Canyon is a place of historical & cultural significance to the local people -- the Yavapai, Apache, and also the Hopi to the north consider it a sacred place.
Boynton Canyon trail is located within the Cocconino National Forest and the Secret Mountain Wilderness. After a brief, gentle walk in from the paid parking lot, the trail splits. The Vista Trail offers a rather steep climb, sometimes over loose scree, up to the area called Boynton Canyon Vortex. It is a challenging climb, offering a rewarding view over the Canyon once you reach the top. Robert, the flutist, is there -- every day -- sharing Reiki blessings through his music and lovingly greeting those who have made the climb. You can catch Robert in mid-morning, around 10:30, and again most days in mid-afternoon.
If you take Boynton Canyon Trail toward the back of the Canyon instead of climbing up to the Vista, the trail is around three miles to the end. It is a box canyon with just the one trail -- you can't get lost. The first portion of the trail skirts along the edge of Enchantment Resort, which occupies 100 acres at the front of the Canyon. This part of the trail is relatively challenging.
Once you get past the resort, the trail evens out and is much gentler going. It generally follows along the old stream bed. The water no longer flows after the rancher who homesteaded in the Canyon decided he needed more water for his cattle and went back to the source with dynamite. The stream diverted underground and there was no more water for the rancher, his cattle, nor the people who had occupied this sacred Canyon for millennia.
The keen observer will spot old ruins high up on the Canyon walls all along the trail. Arrowheads and other stone tools as well as bits of pottery abound. As I was instructed by a very respectful Native friend who knows this Canyon intimately "You just pick them up and pray over them and return them to the Canyon."

Read moreAbsolutely spectacular... if you are tech bound.. the signals are spotty. Google Maps worked well for us. It does get crowded during the later part of the afternoon... parking at the Boyton Canyon trail is very limited.. maybe up to 20 cars at a time.
The round trip hike, took us about an hour and a half ...to the vortex...yes.. you can do it in 1/3rd the time..
If you are just going up to the vortex., take a selfie and head back. It is not a stroller friendly trail :-( but you can carry your toddler easily.. couple of steep climb.. just be patient, and look around... there is always a softer incline.
Watch out for the foot traffic.. some who walk don't have a valid...
