As a symbol of progress and something that has benefitted millions of people, few things can top Glen Canyon Dam. As a symbol of human arrogance by destroying one of the most beautiful places in the world, few things also top it. Guess what side you see in the visitor center, run by the people who built and operate the dam? The displays do a great job of showing how this marvel operates and the benefits it has brought. One appreciates the skill of the men who built it, such as the engineers who made complex and accurate calculations with only slide rules and paper. The products of the dam have enriched the lives of millions of people, from those who play on Lake Powell in the presence of spectacular scenery, to people living in the area receiving electricity, to people who have access to high quality foods thanks to the steady delivery of water to farmers. What is almost as compelling, though, is what is NOT shown. No pictures of Glen Canyon before being deluged in water and silt. No mention of Reclaimation's glee in having a "cash register dam" to fund other dams in Bridge and Marble Canyons, which would have created reservoirs affecting the Grand Canyon. The visitor center costs nothing and is certainly worth a visit to learn about the dam. Staff was friendly and helpful. Just don't expect any discussion of the negative impacts and always be mindful of the agenda of the agency that runs...

Next time you're in the area stopping to check it out I'm sure you'll...
Read morewe got a map with trail indication by the carl hayden visitor center. There were the wire grass trail inside. It s an unmaintained trail.
We were following the trail very carefully. Sunny weather, no rain the day before. Everything was into the best conditions. I went down a 1m 50 rock and jump over the water puddle at the bottom. All the floor around the water puddle was like quicksands. I sunk myself to the hips. I get out the mud. I was covered from my foot to my hips. And impossible to go back because of the mud puddle I could not cross. 4 meters away the same type of rock with water at the bottom. I had to climb a 7 meters rock without any rope or security, barefoot to join my girlfriend worrying as hell... The only thing visitor center told us : we don't design trails and it can happen ...... Those people are irresponsible... they gave us this map....
Be very careful, those people don't care about...
