I recently came across Honest Live Poultry in Franklin, New Jersey, and I felt compelled to speak out about what I witnessed and learned. The name of this business suggests integrity and transparency, but what actually takes place behind its doors raises serious concerns about animal cruelty, sanitation, and a complete lack of empathy toward living creatures.
The very concept of “live poultry markets” — where animals are kept confined, often in cramped cages, awaiting slaughter in front of one another — is deeply unsettling. At Honest Live Poultry, the birds appear frightened, overcrowded, and visibly stressed. The air is heavy with the smell of blood, feathers, and fear. While they may claim to operate within certain “halal” or “humane” standards, the reality is far from humane. There is nothing ethical about forcing animals to endure prolonged suffering for the sake of convenience or profit.
Modern consumers are becoming increasingly aware of how their food is sourced, and it’s shocking that establishments like this still exist in communities that claim to value compassion and progress. In an era when we have countless ethical, plant-based, and regulated alternatives, there is simply no justification for maintaining an outdated, cruel industry that causes pain to sentient beings and poses potential public-health risks.
What disturbs me most is not only the treatment of the animals but also the normalization of such practices. These markets desensitize both workers and customers to violence against animals, turning suffering into routine. It’s easy to dismiss a chicken or a duck as “just livestock,” but these are living beings capable of fear and pain. Watching them crammed together, gasping for air, and hearing their distressing sounds is something I will never forget.
Additionally, live animal markets can create serious health and sanitation issues for surrounding neighborhoods. Blood runoff, waste, and feathers are not just unpleasant; they attract pests and can carry disease. At a time when public health should be a collective priority, it is irresponsible to allow operations like this to continue with minimal oversight.
If a business calls itself “Honest,” it should begin by being honest about what it does — and about the cruelty involved. The public deserves transparency, and animals deserve dignity and compassion. No cultural or commercial justification can...
Read moreBrother and sister, please be advice that you may find that your orders from this business may sometimes not be halal at all, I’ve purchased chicken from here and upon examining one other the chicken, I realize that one of the chicken’s neck was not cut which indicates that it was not halal. I took the chicken back inquiring about this and I was told, and I quoted “maybe the chicken got suffocated and died and the guy did not realize” so this coming directly from them tells me that sometimes you will get chicken that was already dead and not halal at all! Maybe if you intend of purchasing halal chicken here I advise that you be there to see your animal be slaughtered by halal standards just to make sure you have halal meat! As for me, I will not be buying from this business again due to the excuse I was given, which give me doubts and as a Muslim I will be staying away from...
