Within the city of Franklin this place is a nice option for spending some time amidst pure nature. We went there during winter..as the leaves had already fallen from trees and there was a thick snow cover on the lawns we missed the greenery that I am sure is abundant here during any other time of the year. However even with dry texture of bald trees at the background and bright white snow on the foreground the beauty was distinctively pleasing and one can feel as if he or she has come really far from city life. There are many picnic spots in this area, a golf course, archery arena etc. Deer would be roaming all around in the woods as well as open stretches of lawns. two other attractions are Wehr nature center and boerner botanical gardens. Though they were closed as we went there on christmas day. We went there on another occasion and that experience forces me to recommend highly for visiting the park in full moon night..reach the parking on Whitehall park drive near little south of the junction of west college avenue and Whitehall park drive. On a full moon night you park your car facing west - that is facing the slope of the grassy hill, stop your engine, turn of the light and through your windscreen look at the big Whitehall park pond with a background of dark woods and a moonlit sky up above it. The view is breathtaking. Try it to believe it. Perfect place to enjoy the solitary calmness. The parking places are open till 10pm in the park as we noted from some...
Read moreI'm a hobbyist photographer and I'm always looking for beautiful and interesting places to photograph. This park isn't far from my place so needless to say, it's visited frequently. I've practiced my nature and my portrait photography here. There are many places that are worth it. Trails are simple but be cautious, the initial hill going up and down isn't ideal during winter. I struggle personally as I have spinal issues. So if you have balance issues or any issues with stumbling or falling, take someone with you to hold on to. If you fall, you can slide down with someone at least to be there to make sure you're alright. For the most part I believe it's dog friendly. I've seen plenty when I go. There is one very long hiking path that goes around the small lake I believe it is. Plenty of spots to enjoy a good view and every so often a bench to rest on. Plenty of geese during the summer and fall to watch. Just be careful. The moms aren't particularly friendly despite the abundance of people that can be around during peak times. So be respectful of their...
Read moreThis has been a favorite destination of our mothers for years and years, and although she's been gone for almost 27 years, I took my nine-year-old granddaughter here for the first time. We went to the Boerner Botanical Gardens within the park. There's a new attraction, a garden dedicated to children, called Margie's Garden. It was an instant hit with my granddaughter. There wasn't much in bloom, but I already knew that. Mostly tulips, daffodils, and flowering trees. You can get the blooming schedule if you go on their website. Price of admission was very reasonable at $6 for me as a senior, and $6 for my 9-year-old granddaughter. If I would have known the building's close at 4:00 p.m., we probably would have gotten there a bit earlier. Absolutely love this place and just can't wait to take more of the grandchildren back. I even wore commemorative jewelry of my mother's, so that she was with us...
