Wow.. just... wow. I came here 5 days ago and I find myself stuck in the same spot on my couch just reminiscing. I’m at a loss for words, still. First off, George, thank you. Without this founding father I couldn’t be sitting here enjoying this Little Debbie cake. So good. So fresh.... Enough about me, let’s talk about this gem of a “boyhood home”. Wife divorced me a couple months ago, this one’s for you Lisa. I was traveling from Florida to Maryland to pick up my boy. Bingo was his name-o. Kidding, his names Tyler. I was in low spirits making the trip up to the northern part of our beautiful land of the free. She took the dog, too. It’s hard without Max. Almost... too hard 🤔. Anyway, the wife was running behind schedule. Or should I say “ex-wife destroyer of dreams of peace, harmony, and fidelity”. She cheated on me with Drakeo, the pool guy. I decided to kill some time. Flipped a coin as to where I should go. Heads for the movie theatre, and tails for nap in the Red Lobster parking lot. I did the deed and flipped the copper goddess of a penny. To my negligence, it flew out the window. Not only that, it started rolling. Rolling faster than my ex wife’s Cricut machine was down the stairs after I found out about her and Drakeo. I followed the penny, it was rolling and it was rolling fast. It was giving me “Chef Boyardee can vibes”. I revved my engine... go time. I chased the penny for 13 miles through every loop and turn Fredricksburg, Virginia had to offer my Honda Civic. I followed it up until I was brought face to face with a black metal gate. I looked up and read the fine print. To my amazement it read “Boyhood home of George Washington”. What the hell!? What has this penny gotten me into!? I crept up the long dirt path towards the red beauty in front of me. OUCH! A mosquito got me . I strutted into that house with as much confidence as Drakeo when he opened my fridge to pour himself a cold glass of lemonade. A lovely woman greeted me and made me aware of the entry fee. Twelve dollars. Twelve dollars to tour the very house my favorite wooden tooth founding father grew up in. I’m in. I slapped down 11 one dollar bills. I thought it was fitting for the occasion. As I slapped the twelfth down, I noticed the face on the front winked at me. It was him... I winked back. Shortly after, I was taken on a marvelous tour. I cried the whole time, so I can’t remember every detail. But just know, it was enough to get me over a failed marriage after 14 years. I will definitely be returning. Great job guys, and George this ones for...
Read moreHad about an hour to kill, drove by and saw this National Park of the childhood home of one of our founding fathers, George Washington. Thought it might be neat to check out. They have a visitor center, where it cost $12 to get a ticket to check out the property and have a guided tour of the home. Still not quite spring yet so most of the gardens, flowers and trees will still pretty bare. I would imagine do that in the springtime or summer that the property is quite stunning. I walked around a little bit checked out the house and then walked down to the Rappahannock River. Saw lots wildlife including some deer and woodpeckers. Got back up to the house so I could meet my tour guide. She seemed pretty knowledgeable, we sat outside the house explain the history and how Washington came to be here. Then went inside and pretty much told the story, mostly about his mother. There are lots of little tidbits to learn and she even sent me a couple times with a few questions. Only really disappointing thing he talked about a lot of artifacts that they found here. Everything is a replica basically they found where the original House was and lots of artifacts in the ground. I wish they had an area of where they showed some of the artifacts off. For $12 it wasn't bad she said that they were getting ready to start building her mother buildings where they think a barn and maybe some enslaved quarters were. I'm sure it's well worth it in the spring or summer time to come walk around. If you're a history buff I think it's well...
Read moreWe were headed to the Pope Creek Childhood Home of George Washington years ago when we observed a very small sign posted that said boyhood home of George Washington, Ferry farm. We backed up went in, parked, our car, just a few people digging on the property, we walked around, and then went down an old road towards the river, it got rough and as I was afraid of snakes we left. That was our first experience with Ferry farm. Years later went in again several digs were going on and much info what was found in those digs. There was a fairly large Visitor Center so we went though that. On we went to Pope Creek and more changes there, went into the Memorial House where a Park Ranger was talking, also where the original home was marked out. A nice Visitors Center there too. At some point we went into the home of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, and the Feilding Home. What a wonderful area to visit. Not sure of the dates now as we have visited the battlefields 2 or 3 times. Extra note My 2 times great-grandfather was with the 16th. Co. A Maine Infantry in the Civil War. Seems to me it was the first battle he was in. Va. is high on our list...
