Loved it except for 1 thing. The spots in Pickerel Point are right on top of each other. If you are looking at that campsite map and you're thinking, they look like they are small and not very private, listen to yourself if that bothers you. My experience validated that suspicion. The second I get there this single guy walks right into my campsite like it's an extension of his and starts bothering me for companionship while I am trying to put up my tent. I feel like there is not enough boundaries between the campsites in that loop. Anyone reading this, please realize that some people do not want company, help, advice. Srsly the best thing about camping up to this point was that people respected your privacy, so this was an exception. Imagine you checked into a hotel and the single person next door walks right into your hotel room when you are trying to unpack, starts giving you advice, sees you drop a pair of your underwear and asks if you need help putting your underwear away and won't take a hint. Then comes back and wants to show you something right when you are working really hard to get your tent up as quickly as possible. Yeah, don't be that guy and or girl. Stay in your own campsite and try to feel people out first before approaching. Believe it or not, some people go camping to get away from the real world and other people to commune with nature, SHOCKING. Please realize that each individual pays for their own site and once they take possession of it, you're trespassing if you go into it. Wait to talk to them when they are out walking, when you pass them, etc. Please know that this is my 7th camping trip this year and this was absolutely the exception. The problem is that the way these campsites are set up, it just invites that feeling of shared community space. Some people want that and if that is you, go get your joy! But that is NOT me, lol. The most relaxing and joyous moment of my trip came when I realized he broke down camp and left. The pictures are of that day, I went on a nice hike up the...
Read moreThis past weekend we camped at Promised Land Sate park, Pennsylvania, Deerfield loop. Friday night was a night from hell. A few sites from us a group of campers had 4 sites together, the rest of the loop was light on campers, probably due to impending weather. On these 4 sites they had a minimum of 3 tents each and in total about 30+ people including kids. Well 8:00pm the party started, yelling kids screaming, top of the lungs " talking" and music ohh the music, car lights shining every which way cars up and down roadway, which is a one way loop, they were going both ways. Rangers went through a couple times party went on. Quiet time starts at 9pm, so around 11pm just getting louder, no rangers now on duty, no hosts, unfortunately we relented to calling 911 after calling park office #'s with no answer, they said they would contact a ranger approximate 2 hour eta. Now 1:30 and no ranger, party, party, party, another 911 call, now they say the PD will not come in to that area and no rangers. Party went on till 4 am. We went to ranger station next morning to discuss this issue and we found others campers did also. Supposedly they did go the party campers that morning and issued citations, they did party Saturday night but only till about 12:30. We are far from complainers and never had to resort to calling for help, but this was far and above normal camping etiquette and respect for fellow campers. It was somewhat unsettling though when calling for help that there was no response, wonder what the situation would be if someone was having a medical emergency, and no we did not approach these people as we are only 2 of us against 30...
Read moreWe came for the hiking, and were a little disappointed our first day. After going to the lower lake the second day, though, we were rewarded with great hiking.
We spent our first day there around the main lake, and hiked several of the trails, starting with the 1800 trail. The trails were away from the lake and not particularly interesting walks. Many of the trails were quite wide, obviously great for snowmobiles in the winter, but kind of uninteresting as hiking trails. The forest was old and beautiful, but I ended the day a little disappointed.
The second day we went to the lower lake and the little falls trail, and had a completely different experience. The trails were along a beautiful river and were quite interesting to hike. We went on a rainy day and had to watch our footing among the rocks and roots, and were rewarded with some wonderful views of the roaring river and small falls.
Overall a good experience, but I would warn travelers that there are many cabins right next to the lake, so unless you are actually doing boating on the lake, there is not a lot of hiking right next to the lake, and you may not see a lot of the lake itself. It was too cold to go out in a kayak or canoe the day we went, but it obviously would have been glorious for those activities if the weather were right. Come prepared with a plan and you can have a great day of hiking there, but be aware that the hiking trails are very variable in terms of interest and views.
As many other reviewers have mentioned, also be aware that mobile phone coverage is very spotty. Even in town I sometimes had trouble getting a signal, and coverage on the paths was...
