This is a gem of a museum. It's located on a nice property off the I-30 frontage road in Greenville TX. It's not a huge museum but the space is utilized very well so there is a lot in there. It contains a comprehensive Greenville history that includes everyone from the indigenous people to important citizens from all cultural groups. There is a comprehensive display representing the cotton industry. There are dioramas illustrating "Mainstreet" and war. These are very well done. There is a section dedicated to Audie, WWII, military history in general and local veterans. You can watch a short film about Audie. Outside are some buildings, two of which are originals and one replica. When staffed, you can go inside. At the entrance is a beautiful sculpture of Audie and a memorial to Veterans. There is a small giftshop with reasonable priced items and a nice selection of books, mostly history. You can purchase Audi's autobiography, To He'll and Back which I'm enjoying. (no Kindle version so buy it here instead of Amazon). I bought a sweet doll made from a quilt for just $10. Entry is $6 but separate pricing for Veterans (not sure what). Plenty of parking and wheelchair accessible. Plenty of places to sit and contemplate both inside and out. SHOUT OUT FOR HELP: There are two miniatures in the cotton exhibit that need work from someone with knowledge of miniature gears and pulleys. If you can help, please contact the museum. This is a great place to take school age children though the diorama with shooting may not be appropriate for all. The large map in the military exhibit is particularly educational as it provides a summation of the major WWII battles and a visual of the allegiances of...
Read moreThis museum is incredibly fascinating! The historical breadth it covers makes it both engaging and interesting, and it has something for every age group (well, maybe not babies and toddlers). The coverage of local history is vast, including everything from the Native Americans to sports to industry to fashion to world war history. There are some interactive displays and really great dioramas. It's definitely a couple of hours of fun and sad and warm and curious and entertaining education. I tried to only load photos that did not give away the details of the displays, but enough to whet the appetites of folks who are looking for a great educational experience. The gift shop also has something for everyone. Give this gem of a museum a visit! It is certainly worthwhile. Hopefully, they can get their cotton mill diorama pulleys working soon. I would like to have seen that one in action, but unfortunately the pulleys were not functioning...
Read moreWhat a great experience to visit the Audie Murphy, American cotton Museum in March 2024. The lady was very kind. She told me I want to find him where in the museum and walking through. It was a wonderful experience. I learned so much and about great Texans From Hunt county, famous Americans who did great things it’s always nice to learn more about fellow Texans. And the American Holler heroes is just an incredible site and I would highly encourage anyone interested in World War II or American military to make a trip out there and spend some time looking at the collection of military rifles and everything else military , of course this is Audie Murphy’s museum and his personal items there. He won’t see them anywhere else so make the trip and God bless Audie Murphy for what he did and we enjoy watching his movie still...
