Been on this base numerous times when me and my family lived in Groton for 8 years. The world’s largest submarine base. It has a nice commissary, NEX(2levels), gym, movie theater, galley, bowling alley, gas station, MWR, swimming pool, winter time an ice skating is put up across the street by the golf course, golf course, baseball field, soccer field, a nice submarine museum across the street from main gate, and manmade lake. So much to do and is offered on this base. The amusement park comes to this base every year for the military and civilians. Always a good time to be had.

Gate guards could stand to have less of a bad attitude. One particular guard was pretty gruff in my interaction with her. Definitely not a welcoming experience to someone who’s traveled to visit the base. Edit: I’m touring the US, visiting bases and national parks. After the poor interaction with the gate guard today, I’m noticing it mirrors the other lackadaisical ways the base is maintained. This is the first Naval Base I’ve been to, and I’m not that impressed.

Excellent Connecticut historical location! Conveniently situated near Rt 95 and New London and across from Coast Guard Academy. SSN 571 Nautilus is open for tour. All access is FREE for the entire family. No access to the Naval base from sunmerine museum.

I was stationed here for Sub School,BERT & SWSE(strategic weapons systems electronics)school in the 90's.Im not sure how much its changed, but it was a very boring place when I was there and that includes the base & the area around it.If youve got a car, which I got within two months of being there, there are some really nice places to go within an hours drive or so.Misquamicut Beach,RI is really nice and theres a small town before you get to the beach that looks/feels just like Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge,Tn if youve ever been those places. The barracks where we slept looked/felt just like they did at bootcamp, except the shower had individual stalls.I agree with the comment another guy left stating everywhere you walked on base felt like it was...

I went to school here at the Basic Enlisted Submarine School from February 2006 until May sometime of the same year. it was pretty much boring and very cold. Nothing much to do if you don't have a vehicle. I had to take an expensive taxi everywhere. i'm curious what it would be like if I would have been stationed there instead of scholling there. I mean it had your basic Navy base things that you would need. it was an old base as well but i had some good memories besides I got to get out...
