The worst experience I had on Oahu, my home island.
I was born and raised here and have experienced a fair share of bad experiences but this by far beats them all as the worse.
They constantly ask you to show them your ID to "prove" that you're a Hawaii resident or not. They don't ask you to show it, they ask you to PROVE it and don't ask in a kind manner as well.
You have to show your ID THREE times before you can even go and get a ticket to get into Hanauma Bay.
You have to wait in an unmarked line that just says "wait here", but you don't know what you're waiting for as the employees and the guards don't explain AT ALL.
I went in wanting to just take pictures of the beautiful bay, yet a female employee asked me "Why do you want to take pictures of this place?" in a smug way giving the notion that there was nothing of worth taking pictures here. I then stated that although I am a Hawaii resident, I live abroad, but still possess a Hawaii address and driver's license. She then asked where's my camera...Jeez in this day and age I have to show you that my camera is my PHONE? Then she kept questioning me about my residency and eventually led me to the female guard to say that she'll allow me to go just to take pictures.
The guard then looked at her slyly, which made the female employee state, "You think he's lying?" They had the absolute nerve and gall to think that I was lying just to take pictures. I was wearing a dark buttoned up shirt and dark black jeans with shoes. You think I'm going to go swimming in that attire?? After they kept going back and forth thinking that I was lying or not, they let me through and I just stated, "You folks have no hospitatly and no aloha" while shaking my head.
Apparrently that upset her as she stopped me and questioned me saying "What did you say?" She then said that the reason they had us wait in the line was because we had to watch an instructional video about the bay as it was a nature preseve. I said then proceeded to ask why didn't they put a sign saying that while we're waiting in the line to go in. There is no sign saying that we have to watch a video and nobody tell us this. We are just told to wait here. (While waiting in the line, I saw many other people "skip" the line and go in and out of the bay which made me question why we were waiting in line)
She then cockily answered that is there a need to put a sign for everything with an underlying hint of asking if I was stupid. I then said that they have a sign saying to wait there which if we're that stupid to need a sign to wait then we might as well have a sign to say WHY we're waiting.
After a heated argument she let me go and take the pictures which I promptly did and once I took them stormed out of Hanauma Bay.
This place is too commercialized with no friendliness, no hospitatly, no ALOHA to local residents and wanting to accomodate mostly foreigners and out-of-state people. I will be sure to NEVER come back here again. If you want to see Hanauma Bay I would suggest you take a helicopter tour over rather than go through the hassle of dealing with these rude...

Hanauma Bay, located on the southeast coast of Oahu, is a well-known snorkeling destination in Hawaii. With its beautiful scenery, easy access, and excellent facilities, it offers a great opportunity for tourists and locals alike to experience the marine life that Hawaii is famous for. However, when compared to the snorkeling experiences available on Maui or the Big Island, it falls somewhat short.
Pros:
Beautiful Scenery: Hanauma Bay is undoubtedly a stunning location. With its crystal-clear waters, white sandy beach, and surrounding green cliffs, it provides a breathtaking backdrop for a day of snorkeling or sunbathing.
Easy Access: The bay is easily accessible from Honolulu, making it a convenient destination for those staying in or around the city. The parking lot is close to the beach, and there is a shuttle service available for those who prefer not to walk down the steep path to the bay.
Facilities: Hanauma Bay has excellent facilities, including restrooms, showers, and a snack bar, ensuring that visitors are comfortable and well-catered for during their stay. The bay also has a visitor center that offers educational programs and information about the marine life in the area.
Lifeguards: Safety is a priority at Hanauma Bay, with trained lifeguards on duty to ensure the wellbeing of all visitors. This can provide peace of mind for those who may be new to snorkeling or concerned about water safety.
Cons:
Snorkeling Comparison: Although Hanauma Bay offers a wonderful snorkeling experience, it simply cannot compare to the underwater worlds found on Maui or the Big Island. The marine life at Hanauma Bay is diverse, but it may feel limited when contrasted with the more expansive coral reefs and larger variety of fish species found at other locations in Hawaii.
In conclusion, Hanauma Bay is a beautiful and convenient snorkeling spot that offers excellent facilities and safety measures. However, for those seeking the ultimate snorkeling experience, Maui or the Big Island may provide a more diverse and expansive underwater world. Hanauma Bay is still a worthwhile destination for those who appreciate natural beauty and want to experience Hawaii's marine life, but more seasoned snorkelers may prefer the richer offerings of...
