I've walked through this hike many times as a local and it is definitely not easy when it's your first time. For first time users, be aware that your legs may get sore from this trail. I highly recommend to bring a water bottle with you or any other beverage container as it can get very hot and tiring as you progress through the trail. Bring sunscreen as well as there is little to no shade through the hike. It can get very hot when the sun is fully up. I would also bring a small towel to wipe way sweat. Another note is to walk with running shoes as walking with sandles or other non-athletic footwear can make the walk far more difficult. A note is that restrooms are at the bottom located near the parking lot so I suggest using it before starting as it would be inconvenient to feel the need to go during the hike. The summit at the end of the trail has a lot of great views that are worthy of numerous pictures and selfies. There are a good amount of areas at the end to take pictures in. There is also a strong breeze at the top which is something to look foward to. I can assure the effort to walk up this trail will be worth it. Another note, there is a small section where the road tracks have no ground underneath. For first time users, I highly suggest taking the presented alternate path that is less risky and goes around that area. I would make this a requirement to parents/guardians bringing your children to this hike. Overall, I love to go on this hike and it really makes you work to get to the top. Good for cardio and enjoying the beautiful landscape!!! Lastly, I suggest to go eat somewhere after finishing the hike. Helps to restore some energy.

Oh boy, you have to visit this place! Not for the faint of heart I'll tell you. Parking was easy and a restroom near by at the BOTTOM only. No water fountain anywhere, so you gotta make sure to bring water. Minimum one 16oz bottle per person. Two adults and two kids with two 16oz, wife and I had to conserve for the kids on the way up and down. I downed a bottle of gaterade and coconut water after. Some folks were going up and down multiple times and you can tell some just don't do this very often. Make sure you have good shoes and it's sandy and could get could slippery, especially for kids. My 6yo and 8yo made it up and down. A lot of complaints on the way up. But half way up they kept going. My little one slipped couple of times and cried a little. But got back up and finished. I tell you, keep pushing them up us totally worth it. They were so proud (as are we) after it was over. No success without pain, I told my boys. If was a great lesson and sweet (and lot of sweat) finish.

Kokohead...Kokohead...Kokohead...what can I say? This is a love/hate hike. It is so awesome, yet so terrible. So beautiful, yet so ugly. This will be one of the greatest cardio workouts of your life. If you make it. No, really lol...make sure you make it to the top! Even if you've got to stop 100 times and sit and rest 50 times. The view at the top is worth every step, every breath, and every cry, scream, or complaint. We hiked it at 3:30 PM. Our intention was to hike early morning, which would have been much better, because the sun was BLAZING. But our other plans took much longer than we expected. I wanted to burst into tears mid hike. At the very beginning I almost turned around and left because I was already exhausted. And I drank my liter and a half of water before I got to the top. But I made it. And it was so worth it. This was only my second time hiking here. I am 25 lbs heavier and not in great shape. But I cant wait to go back and conquer it again one day.

Did the railway hike here. Its a tough climb but truly worth it. You have to park in the car park near the baseball field and walk to the start of the railway. From here the gradient of the track gradually increases untill you reach the base of the mountain. From here it goes to easily a 70/75° angle for the majority of the way up. It must be noted that before this point there is an elevated, bridge like, section that runs for about 10 meters with a 5 meter drop below. The sleepers are spaced quite close together here but there is also an easy route to the right for those not keen on going over it. Once at the top the views are amazing in every direction with the sense of accomplishment when you look down at what you've just climbed backing them up. We did the walk when there was a few showers every now and then. This made the sleepers quite slippy so great care was needed on the way down. One of the best walks we've done on the island by far.

It was a difficult hike but totally worth every ragged breath. Most of the way up is filled with rubble but there is a small section that is open between each tram and it can be scary. But I took my time going up and coming down and I was fine. I saw some people scooting down and going up on all 4s. If it is too uncomfortable, you can bypass this using Murphy's Bypass, this brings you back to the solid trams. Towards the top it gets really steep but there are many areas for rest that you can step off for a bit to catch your breath and views! You don't have to wait long to see views but the pay off is at the top. You have a 360 view, you can see all the way to Diamond head. Took me about an hour to reach the top. Wear good shoes/sneakers , flip flops are not recommended for this. It was magnificent! So glad I got to do this.

8/10 difficulty of hike This hike takes you over 1000 ft up and is considerably treacherous walking up and down due to the far spacing of the wooden rungs. Reccommend wearing jogging attire with running shoes. There were slot of people sucking because they wore sandles or slides. Also, bring a water bottle per person. The sun starts getting hot a bit after 9am, there is no shade. Watch your step at all times. Kids love this hike but prepare them its going to be hard but they are strong enough to do it. If you have knee, ankle, or balance issues, reccommend avoiding this activity as its easy to fall and there are no railings. Parking is free and easy.
