William Myron Keck was known as "the world's greatest oil prospector." His ability to locate petroleum deposits was so uncanny that some believed him to be clairvoyant. In 1921, he became the founder of Superior Oil Company. In 1990, the late Keck's foundation provided 70 million dollars toward the building of this telescope, hence it was named after him. At the time of completion, it was the biggest in the world. Today, using infrared technology, it is regarded as the world's most productive observatory. It has been used to discover a moon, a black hole and even a distant galaxy!

We were allowed to enter an area that is sometimes open to the public. The park ranger at the visitor center recommended visiting the observatory. It was quite interesting and we were happy that we didn't miss this great opportunity.

Amazing views up this mountain to the observatory. Next time I will plan a evening trip to see the sunset and stars. Weather was to cloudy and rainy this trip but overall great experience in a 4x4 Jeep
