Hicks Canyon Park — Attraction in Irvine

The park is nice. It was empty for lunch the day after Father's day. We used a huge, very sturdy gazebo. However, we actually came for a bike ride. We rode from OC Great Park using Cypress Village trail, Jefferies Open Space Trail and Hicks Canyon Trail. That is at least 8 miles of beautiful trail through absolutely beautifully landscaped open space corridors - acres and acres of gardens, fields and mini forests all artistically designed and peppered with bits of local history. It is an amazing bike ride. Mostly flat except where it goes up over or down under cross roads. There is one on-grade crossing at a traffic light with a crosswalk between Jefferies Open Space and the Hicks Canyon Trail, but all the rest are beautiful bridges or nicely landscaped tunnel crossings. Getting from Great Park to the Cypress Trail is also easy except for crossing the last street to get to the trail which has freeway on/off ramps with traffic signals but no crosswalks. Hicks Canyon Park is a small but lively space in Irvine. My son played AYSO soccer here on Saturday mornings, and it was always great to see families gathering for the games. This was his first season, and he even made it to the playoffs. Unfortunately, he was sick on playoff day. He threw up in the morning, felt weak, and struggled to run. But he still played the full hour. His team didn’t win, but he showed incredible determination and learned a lot throughout the season.

Now that the season is over, we look back on all the fun moments at the park, cheering on the kids and enjoying the lively atmosphere. A great spot...

They recently redid the kids playground area. It's not bigger, but they added new play structures and removed the sand pits. So I think whether or not you like that is a matter of taste.

The fire pit area is awesome. Great for large groups. First come first serve though.

Baseball diamonds are great. No issues.

However... The real issue is the soccer field. They have deteriorated heavily over the last couple of years and the city is not maintaining them now. One field is basically a mud flat with occasional pot holes from eBike kids burning out. The other field is barely...
