The best in the park. 225ft drop almost 90 degrees straight down. No inversions. Just a lot of humps with 3 to 4 seconds of airtime each hump. Long ride! It's a Bollinger & Mallard masterpiece which started the hypercoaster genre. Consistently rated on the top 10 in the world.
Note: My cell phone escaped my pants pocket near the end of on July 4. If that happens, plan on no assistance from the park, even though their stated policy is they will "do everything we can" to help retrieve lost items. They will not allow you escorted access during closed times when it is safe. All they will do is give you a web link to report it, and the next time they search (twice a month) if they happen to search that area (they only do portions each time), if they happen to find it and no one pockets it, you might get it back in a month, or two, or three.
Very frustrating that their procedures are designed to give you the smallest chance of recovering your device. Recovering a device once its battery runs out is monumentally more difficult. I offered to pay $200 to get access, as I knew right where it was. I did not expect the ride to be interrupted or anyones safety to be compromised. But they were unable to do anything beyond hope it gets found.
I decided to not roll the dice and recovered my phone after the park closed and the ride put to bed. It took 8 minutes because the phone was up and trackable.
I've probably ridden this ride 100 times over the years without losing anything. But because of the air time you get on this ride, it is best to chain your device to your pants because it...
Read moreFar and away my favorite coaster at Great Adventure. Just about perfect in every way. Nitro is the ultimate hyper coaster and here's why.
Nitro has an excellent setting and a gorgeous, unique color scheme. Going out into the trees is just divine for a ride like this. While we're talking aesthetics, the ride's sign, name, and logo are all cool, so much so that I got a shirt (pictured). To top it off, there's a Mortal Kombat theme remix playing in the station, giving this ride an overall badass feeling.
The coaster itself is just perfect. The pacing is flawless. It consistently goes from one element to another. No bad or forceless elements here, and no dull moments, but the pacing isn't too fast for the average guest.
The coaster provides a great variety of forces to enjoy. There are two large camelbacks, three bunny hills, a two camelbacks that dive left on the way down, a forceful hammerhead turn, and a very forceful upwards helix, plus two sharp drops, one at the beginning and one in the middle. There's plenty of floater airtime and some sharp momentary moments of ejector, and very strong positive forces, especially on the helix. I think a coaster is always better with a helix so that makes this ride special to me.
To top it off Nitro is smooth and comfortable with the very roomy and comfy clamshell restraints, and in general it is a huge ride that gives a great sense of height, speed, and power. This is one of my favorite coasters in the world and I'd come back to this park just...
Read moreNitro is a roller coaster that packs in various elements that make the ride an overall fun experience. From the moment you are locked into your seat, you will notice how comfortable the restraints are. You feel tight and secure, yet at the same time open to your surroundings. The train climbs the lift hill slowly, which gives you time to examine th beautiful view. Your reach the top and climb over the peak for a few seconds before plummeting 215 feet, reaching a speed of 80 miles per hour at the bottom of the drop. I did not find this drop to be very intense. Unlike many other hyper coasters, you don’t really get that feeling in your stomach. Instead, you float out of your seat a little. After the drop, you go through a series of over banked turns and airtime hills that give you some nice, but not great, floater air. Although there is a lot of floater air, it isn’t very strong, and you only float a little. Throughout all of this, there is a semi-intense helix where you pull a lot of G’s. This g force will cause your vision to temporarily go grey, and once it is over your vision will clear up again. Overall, Nitro is a very fun coaster, but personally for me, it didn’t have that intensity that I was looking for in a...
