My sister and I stumbled across this on our trip, first seeing signs along the roadway and eventually the Bison itself in the distance. We knew we had to stop.
The Bison himself is cool, but I also really enjoyed the museum nearby that shows the history of Buffalo, some interactive exhibits, and really interesting artifacts worth checking out. The Buffalo itself is a free experience, but there is a donation for parking at the site, and the museum is about $8 per adult. I thought it was worth the cost, but mileage may vary based on interest.
I thought it had a good balance of informative exhibits for adults and more fun-focussed activities for kids.
They also have Buffalo you can watch in a nearby field from the observation deck at the museum, but at the time of our visit they were in the winter field - which is a short way away from the property and not visible from the deck.
There is also a pioneer village in the same area (you have to drive through it to reach the parking directly at the Buffalo). However, it appeared to be closed for the season when we made our way through.
This was a worthwhile spot to check out, but I wish we could've made it at a time that was more in-season. Still - it's very...
Read moreSuch a funny and educational place! Ive been in North Dakota for a couple of months for work, on the surface, there isn’t much to do here, but this is truly a hidden little gem. Only about an hour from Fargo, and absolutely worth the drive. Not only are the views on the way beautiful, the destination is so charming! I was expecting to only see a big statue, and was instead surprised by an educational and entertaining museum, a park, and a wonderfully preserved little pioneer town. The street leading to the Buffalo statue is lined with preserved buildings, the insides of each also preserved for the public to view and interact with. There is also a small park for the kids, and herds of wild Buffalo you can see from the binoculars provided on site. Super cool experience and a must-do if you’re...
Read moreNo living buffalo roaming to see today (they must have all been in the barn) but there is indeed the World's Largest Buffalo to see. His name is "Dakota Thunder" and he's huge! If you're patient, you can perhaps get a picture of him without any bystanders. Welcome to the Buffalo City!
Unveiled in 1959, he is 26 feet tall and 46 feet long and is made of steel and stucco. It is indeed anatomically correct though real buffalo aren't this large. The buildings that surround the buffalo are authentic though they were moved here in the last few decades to make up the Frontier Village. Interesting gift shops and frontier trinkets and even an ice cream place.
There is no charge to visit the World's Largest Buffalo Monument and a small parking lot is at the end...
