This is the woods where my home is located. I live a block from the entry, and I feel somewhat proprietary. I am constantly disappointed with the poor maintenance and protection of the woods, and I am disappointed in the visitors and the forest preserve. People litter and walk or drive on plants. I have seen groups of kids set trees on fire. The beautiful river that hosts wildlife is full of bottles, cans, paper and even diapers. I am not blaming the forest preserve police. Easy to find, plenty of parking, picnic area, paved and unpaved paths where you can feel closer to nature or do off road biking. Lots of wildlife. The grounds are impeccably maintained. The paved path crossed over a bridge and with planes flying overhead, in and out of O’Hare while Amtrak and Metra trains zoom and out of town via tracks that run on the outer edges to the forest preserve. People here seem very chill too, walking their dogs, biking and spending time with family. Read moreI've been going here for 20 years. My friends and I as teens would have bonfires all the time undetected. We went recklessly though. We always put it out before leaving. Anyways...I'm not happy about the bike path running straight through the woods now. I can imagine how many trees died for it. I hope they planted new ones for every one they killed or maybe even did some transplants. Anyways. ... one of the old paths down to the river is still there so im happy about that.
