Read moreOur family celebrated our Christmas on Ritter Island in the Rock House, December 16. This was such a good decision. We felt like we had the island to ourselves, a nature experience, wonderful accommodations in the Rock House. Where to start? The house was immaculate, even the kitchen trash can. The house is roomy and open and perfect. The sunroom, with an electric fireplace and windows all around, gave us the views. The kitchen was beautifully appointed; all sorts of bowls, pans, cookie sheets. We did bring our own spices. Suggestion: we didn't find any pot holders. The living/dining area was perfect for conversation. I loved the dining room table. Our 7 gathered there for meals and games. The grandchildren had plenty of room to play with their new Lego sets. The downstairs bath had a tub; upstairs is a spacious 1/2 bath. Bedrooms were totally fine. 2 queen bedrooms, 1 bedroom with 2 twin beds, 1 with a twin trundle. Adequate sheets, blankets, towels. We loved being outside taking advantage of the island perimeter walk. Saw a small herd of deer, eagles, fish, waterfowl, other birds. I am so proud of the State of Idaho for sharing this jewel. Oh, outside is ideal for slow meandering. There are benches and picnic tables discretely placed all over. The whole story of Minnie Miller, Judge Ritter, Nature Conservancy and Idaho State Parks is worthwhile to know. We...
Read moreDid the whole Thousand Springs scenic byway today with all the stops and this was my favorite. It's a total little paradise down by the river. So peaceful, wildflowers, river otters, woodpeckers, clean bathroom, large manicured lawn area with many picnic tables, can wade is the beautifully clear water (very cold, but you get used to it!). Hardly anyone there at all at 6pm and had the gorgeous waterfall to ourselves. The island itself usually closes at 3:00 p.m. presumably due to there being a couple historic vacation rentals on it (can be booked through the state park). However the park part not on the island is open until 10:00 p.m. This includes the waterfall and the picnic area with restrooms and access to the springs. It is of note that there is a hydro power station (shaped like a castle, lol) at the site but the place is so beautiful it's not a problem and it gets out of view once you start walking.
