It was fun and memorable, But the park ranger needs to explain a little bit better what the trip around the island actually is in a kayak. because even though the current takes you out to the Snake River when you go around the island and come back in you're fighting the current all the way in. And we couldn't figure out why since the current was going the other direction pulling us out to the river. When we got to the end we figured out why. Just a small area of the water was actually going the other direction. So after kayaking all the way to blue heart springs and back we figured we were going to be able to relax and just let the current take us back to the car and that certainly didn't happen.it was the hardest part of the whole trip and it was at the end of the trip which made it double challenging. but just when you think you can't kayak anymore but it's the only way you're going to get back to your car you find the energy to do it. But i tell you if I'd have seen that park ranger when we got back he'd have...
Read moreWe weren't able to kayak here due to weather, but we came to talk around a bit, and it was lovely. The waterfalls are STUNNING. There really isn't much area to hike, though you can walk on some trails on Ritter Island to get a better view of some of the waterfalls. There are also some historic buildings on Ritter Island that are pretty neat. I also just live that whatever power/hydraulics company that is across the river has chosen to have castle-like architecture. This wasn't an earth shattering experience for us, but it was a really lovely place to walk around and hang out. Keep an eye out for stinging nettle if you're planning to go off...
Read moreSuch amazing geology, worth a stop. Great place for kayaking or paddle boarding. Note: It gets crazy crowded and the parking isn't awesome. Also note: A fun kayak/paddle boarding trip is the loop around the island but I would recommend that you take the northern route (if you're looking at the island from the launch, go right under the bridge). The springs "river" travels briskly north once past the power station. I made the mistake of going "left" around the island and got wind in my face on the Snake (the wind blows up river) and then the current from the Thousand Springs "river" so it was a long trip...
