Lydgate is nice for a family to visit. The swimming/snorkeling area is protected from currents, and is fun for kids to play in, or see some fish. There have been times, after big storms, that it has been closed while being cleared of debris, but it's generally clean and clear. There are also a handful of pavillions with picnic tables - they fill up quickly on weekends.
Across the parking lot there's a fantastic playground for kids, with swings, slides, a tire bridge, and much more! It's huge.
About a half mile down a paved trail is the Lydgate Park Campground. Camping is limited to tents only, and reservations are required. Warning: Spots fill up quickly! The campground has restrooms and showers.

A very strong breakwater separates the open ocean from two pools of ocean water, one for small children and the other for older children and adults.
