I would give zero Stars if I could. I shopped here for the first time (7/16/25) and was woefully disappointed by the layout of the store. A vast majority of the merchandise isn't sorted by rhyme or reason and is just stuck on shelves throughout the store. Unless you are looking for clothes, jewelry, or a printer. It would take HOURS to go through the whole store the way it's set up. That could have been fine, but I saw a lot of broken items and a lot of bags for sale full of random, unwanted items as well (old linen squares, used & tarnished cutlery, etc). Some of the items are definitely overpriced for being second-hand. The aisles are also difficult to walk through and hard to turn around in when pushing a cart. The workers aren't much better. As I was checking out a worker girl without a name tag, so I hope she worked there, came up, stood right next to me (we were almost shoulder to shoulder), and glared at me while I was checking out. Keep in mind this was my first time being here, she didn't introduce herself or explain her presence beside me AT THE SELF CHECKOUT REGISTER, just took the book I was trying to scan out of my hand and said "Hardback price" while pointing to a sheet with a barcode for the different kinds of books being sold. It was entirely off-putting. She bagged my book and watched me insert my card as if I was a criminal, as if I was there solely to steal that book. I had literally just walked up to the checkout to pay! Why would I do that if I was just going to steal? She watched me put my card in the machine and wouldn't turn around so that I could enter the pin. When I asked her if she had to stand there while I was checking out, she only said, "YES!" In an annoyed and exasperated tone, no further discussion, no explanation. Had I not wanted the book so badly, ( it was a hardback copy of a book I can only find in paperback at bookstores), I would have just left and not gotten anything. Thats how awful I was feeling up there, and my anxiety was already bad enough today. I honestly felt like I was being discriminated against solely because I was in the store with my biracial (black and white) daughter. The worker had just the stankest face the whole time she interacted with us. When I told her, " Wow, I've never been made to feel like a criminal at a thrift store before." She just looked annoyed again and walked away. I had just been at the Goodwill at E. Dorothy Ln a few minutes before, and the entire trip was much better by contrast. All the books, movies, kids' toys, etc. are in their own section & easy to find. The workers greeted us and were nice while we were in the store, and I also didn't feel discriminated against or made to feel like a common thief and criminal as I was checking out. Needless to say, I will NOT be returning to the Valley thrift store. This decision comes solely from the way I was treated by the worker as I was checking out, I could have put up with the messy layout of the store had I not had such a bad experience as I was paying. I am adding a picture of my receipt to prove I was a customer.

Update: 5/2/25 - the employees can’t tell you their name? How dehumanizing is that??? Update: 1/23/25 - I finally figure out what didn't feel quite right and boy the answer is astounding. After seeing a copious amount of nice clothing that was due to go on sale go magically off the rack in the space of under 24 hours, and not seeing much at the 50% and 75% markdown price, I finally stopped and asked one of the nice young men about what was happening. Before Valley thrift allows the clothes to get to the 50% off or the 75% off they take them off the rack and box them up and send them to a different store to be resorted and reracked. What a disappointment. What once was a neighborhood treasure has been infected and ruined by greed. Another community resource eaten up and taken away by money-hungry business and profiteering. They mark things up using a computer software, which often leads things to be market above common retail value (see pictures, plus a Land's End quarter zip for 65.99????????.... Really???) OLDER----- Something isn’t quite right… the pricing is kinda crazy and a lot of things end up wayyyyy overpriced.

It's the luck of the draw on this place. Some things are good deals. You just have to find the good deals mixed in there. I really don't care for the way they catalog their jeans. They're tagged XL or S for example, instead of their REAL actual size. One pair of name brand jeans we got were only 99 cents, the other name brand pair was $8.99. Also they're all mixed together anyway, so it's just messy. The aisles are mostly pretty narrow, so you'll be diving and dodging other customers for your entire visit. You'll also have to work you're way around all the workers checking items using huge carts that block half the aisles. At one point, there were two workers side by side with those carts blocking an entire aisle which made no sense at all. You can find some pretty cool stuff if you look hard enough, though. I guess it's worth a visit.

Valley Thrift Store is by far 1 of my favorite thrift stores, not only in Dayton, but in the US! I've been to TS's all over the country since 71' & have even spoken to women's groups on thrift store shopping (luncheon & fashion show), so I consider myself an expert. This is the largest TS you'll ever see. To give you an idea of how big it is, I'll share this. Normally I only have 1-2 hrs to spend here, but 1 day I decided to stay as long as I wanted. I was there 5 hours & still felt like I wasn't finished looking!! I took my time that day, & the only reason I stopped is bc they were closing. This store has wide aisles (wider than most TS's) & is always clean. They have new clothing with tags as well as some vintage. They also have furniture, books, records, jewelry, linens, shoes, purses, knick knacks, home decor, small appliances & more housewares than any other TS I've ever been to! Their prices are pretty good, especially when something is marked down. They now have dressing rooms as well as many full length mirrors throughout the store. If you've never been, you won't believe how big it is & if you do plan a trip here, make sure you have a whole day to look. In fact, it's worth getting a group of ladies together to come to this 1 & my other favorite TS down the street on Linden Ave called Village Thrift Outlet. Read my review on their website too! There are restaurants all around this area too. Clark Howard, the consumer guru, says on his talk radio show, that Dayton, Oh has the best TS's in the US & this is 1 of them! I'm from TX & the Dallas News said the same thing! If you have any questions on this place, you can find me on the web. I'm an author (crochet books) & you can look up my name & how to contact me on FB & other...

A friend took me to check out this thrift store, and the selection was good. That was the only good thing about this place. I found a water bottle for sale that I wanted, and it had water in it still...kinda gross, but I looked passed it. As soon as I got to the checkout, they kept taking the items I really wanted to buy away from me, saying "it doesn't have a price,we can't sell it." I kindly asked if a manager could just price the items similar to the many other items in the store, and I was told quite rudely, "NO! That's against company policy!" Ok, sooo it is against company policy to sell as many items every day as they possibly can? They told me to come back tomorrow, and the items will be back on the floor, even the item that clearly went with a loom machine I was purchasing that they would not put back with the machine that it CAME with (that by the way actually doesn't even work/turns out is broken...guess they don't check things like that out before selling). The odds of me finding all the items I tried to buy back on the floor the next day would be slim at best (they also refused to get them priced and hold them off the vast floor, so I could just buy them easily the next day), and quite frankly probably not even worth the gas money to go deal with these rude people who very clearly do not care if they sell anything for their company. It's a thrift store for Pete's sake, not a frickin high end department store. eyeroll I will never spend another dime at this establishment. There are soooo many better thrift stores in our area with much kinder employees, will stick with them! Attitude and helpfulness make or break a business...seems the employees don't know this or just don't care, so very much not worth my...
