Best beach in Charleston. Also ranked as a top 10 beach in the US frequently by magazines I cant relate to. But, i grew up on the neighboring island of Folly, and aside from a beautiful trek out there, Beachwalker is by far the best beach in Charleston, especially if you have a dog. They will allow dogs on leashes and arent jerks about taking your pup for a swim. Stop at Rosebanks Farmers Market on the way home with awesome fresh local seafood, super lobster rolls and the best tomatoes anywhere. In fact, aside from being the second largest island on the east coast behind Long Island NY, Johns Island is the largest tomato producer in the US. Secret is the incredibly rich soil with all the accidental "stuff" to make the tomato famous. Locals have always known JI maters are the only tomato you can combine with Dukes mayo, lil salt and pepper on wonder bread and wait for your tongue to slap your brains out. Or Wadmalaw Island way, make you slap a baby...
Read moreWe have tried to go to this beach 3 times. The first 2 times they were closed for construction the 3rd time the lot was full. We are building a house on Johns island and it's nice to be near a beach that is pretty much 5 minutes away however it's almost completely private. The parking system is ridiculous. If the lot is full you can be put in a queue to alert you when a space is available but you can't wait next to the parking lot you have to go all the way to the shopping center to wait so if you do get an alert your going to have to beat the next guy that got that same alert just to get to that available spot. I mean that's pretty ridiculous. They even say on their site to be prepared to go to Folly Beach. That sounds like a waste of time and gas. You might as well just go to Folly. I really want to check Kiawah Island Beach out so I guess we will have to get ther at like 8am to find parking. That's crazy. Also it's like $15 to park. It's basically...
Read moreWe made a quick visit here in the off season in the middle of March. It was a cool and windy day, so we didn't stay long, but we wanted to have a look at the beach.
There was a very nice wood boardwalk for getting out to the beach. This was so much easier than hiking through sand.
We stopped here with our little dog, nice to see a pet friendly beach. Your furry friend needs to stay on his leash though.
The beach itself is pretty. There is some harder sand here and I even saw someone ride by on a bike.
Parking was free, but I believe they charge in the peak seasons.
I was happy to see they have actual bathrooms here, I'm still scarred from the port-a-potties that I grew up with when summering on Cape Cod.
On the way out I spotted a dog washing area, which is pretty convenient. There are also showers for...
