Tucked away in the small town of Kirtland, Ohio stands the historic Kirtland temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was built in 1834-1836 by an impoverished group of early saints at much expense and sacrifice but with great faith and a deep love of God. Due to extreme persecution from outsiders, the saints were forced to move away and abandon their temple after only two years of use. But the visions, blessings and outpouring of the Spirit of God that took place within these humble walls cannot be overstated. In this humble house of God, priesthood keys were restored by Moses, Elias and Elijah. Even the Lord Jesus Christ Himself appeared here to accept this house and to pour out blessings upon the heads of His people. In early 2024, the Church of Jesus Christ reacquired this holy edifice and offers daily tours. Stop by the visitors center and take a free tour through one of the most sacred, yet humble places on earth.

This is a great historic site of special significance for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saint and other faiths with Latter-day Saint origin such as the Community of Christ. The Community of Christ does an outstanding job maintaining the grounds and the temple. Their tour guides are excellent; very personable, detailed, and thoughtful. The temple itself has huge historical significance. As a Latter-day Saint, I have been very moved while on the tour while considering the events of great significance that took place in there. I have heard other Latter-day Saints claim they weren't as moved because the temple is not owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but that hasn't been my experience at all. Well worth the tour.

Emotionally & spiritually moving experience. Start in the visitor center & be prepared to see such awe inspiring beauty when the movie ends, the curtain opens and the tour begins. Temple architecture is on another level of beauty, design, & function. It's one that mixes different styles like Federal, Greek Revival, & Gothic Revival architecture. Kirkland Temple was the 1st LDS temple which means it's is extra special. Visiting Kirkland is on another level & should be on your list of places to experience. Don't forget to travel down the hill to join the guided tour of the sawmill, homes, and general store that is part of this historical area. 45 mins away is Johnson Farm too. Bring a picnic basket and enjoy lunch here.

History come to life. Whatever your personal thoughts may be of the Latter-day Saint movement(s) or Joseph Smith, visiting the Kirtland Temple inspires a greater appreciation for the charismatic religious leader and the ingenuity of his dedicated followers. The well tended grounds provide an atmosphere of reflection and the interior of the temple transports visitors to 19th century religious America. My tour guide was knowledgable and answered all questions from the group, though I do wish greater emphasis was given to the architectural history of the building. Well worth the visit and small $10 charge for children over a certain age and adults. I intended to revisit many times in the future.

This is the first temple built by the early saints of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints. This building is were the lord promised many blessings to the early saints and revealed many plain and precious truths we hold dear. It has come to my understanding that the ownership has changed from the Community of Christ to that of the Church of Jesus Christ of latter day saints but I wanted to say thank you to the the Community of Christ and their dedication to preserving this historic building. My hope is that regardless of religion, that everyone who visits will feel the lords love for not only themselves but for those around them.

What a great historic tribute to early Christians; Saints, who believed that this was a country where freedom of religion would allow them to build their churches, temples, and communities. It didn't happen quite that way. They were persecuted and murdered and chased out of many states... including Ohio. The buildings, the stories, and the testimonies they bore remain. It's a beautiful thing to see and a testament to their faith. The tour guides and hosts are friendly and knowledgeable. The facilities are modern and well maintained. I highly recommend a visit. Spring and fall are best, but anytime, it is still a great experience.
