A good place for a quiet 90 minute hike when you want to escape the crowds.
I like to start at forest hill gate and work around the park counter clockwise via “conservancy” climb, up to the descanzo motorway, past the Glendale PD gun range, down to the Cherry Canyon motorway up to the radio tower, and back down / around the connecting single tracks to the Flint Canyon gate, and then up the sand rock climb which connects to the north end of lizys loop and back down the motorway to the forest hill gate.
It’s about 80-90 minutes with 1,000 feet of climbing.
The only major downside are the highly aggressive bees. I’ve been attacked on 4 different occasions resulting in 7 different stings. Always to my backside since the bees there are very aggressive and will pursue you. African bees would be my guess. In all instances Ive had to run down the trail to safety nearly resulting in a fall.
On all occasions my bee encounters have been on the single track in the south end of the park near the “ultimate destination” picnic area. Side note- this is the one water source in the park, so it’s good to know where it is. My route goes around it but easy to include with a short detour.
I see bees at Griffith Park all the time and even interact with them since they cover the water fountains, but have never been stung there in all of my years.
If you are allergic, steer clear of Cherry Canyon. 4 instances sounds like a lot, but that’s out of 50+ trips. I’ve lost count. So it’s not guaranteed and I obviously still return on...

Cherry Canyon Park composed of a small but dense network of trails that are great for hikers, runners, bikers and walkers. It offers a panoramic view of mountains. This park is located in La Cañada Flintridge near the popular Descanso Gardens.
There are different entrance/exit points to CCP such as Descanso-CherryCanyon trail, Conservancy trail, Motorway, Forest hill and Hampstead. I decided to take the Descanso Cherry Canyon trail on Descanso dr road. The trail has an elevation of 750 ft with a hiking level of 4 (moderate with steep inclines; not for beginners). The entire loop trail length was 5.5 miles and you’ll definitely spend at least 2 hours; it’s summit reach to 1,887 ft with amazing view.
Cherry Canyon trail is dog friendly and bike friendly. There is little to no shade on these trails. Fellow hikers were amiable and respectful. There’s very little to no human traffic on these trails. Furthermore, the trails were well maintained and trail signs are abundant. However, you can easily get loss given these trails were interconnected as evidence by a young male hiker who got loss asked me for direction.
Finding street parking was easy. Cell reception was good. Overall, it’s a wonderful trail to get a good cardio workout and enjoy the...

I passed families picnicking and a few dog-walkers. Trail is well-marked with benches halfway up—a nice touch. Great easy option if you want greenery...
