A perfect farm-to-table finish to a day at Descanso Gardens Follow on IG: the_hungry_emil Farmhouse at Descanso Gardens is a stunning new venture by the chef behind Farmhouse at Roger’s Gardens in Corona del Mar. Nestled in the tranquil hills of La Cañada, adjacent to one of Southern California’s most beautiful botanical gardens, this spot is a true gem—especially after a long walk through Descanso’s blooming trails. We started with the Pizza of the Day: a beautifully balanced creation of prosciutto, harvest peaches, mustard greens, and a touch of balsamic glaze. Sweet, salty, and perfectly charred—every bite was outstanding. The Coriander & Cumin Spiced Carrots were another highlight—earthy, vibrant, and expertly paired with burrata and mint. The Cauliflower Steak impressed with pine nuts and a herbaceous, smoky flavor from its rub and herb sauce. For mains, the Grilled Hoisin Soy Glazed Pork Tenderloin was juicy and rich, with a potato purée and almond crumble that showcased responsible sourcing and culinary care. The Seared Salmon was perfectly cooked, but the real standout was the unique, hearty texture of the Tehachapi Grain Project Sonora Grains underneath—a detail that showed how deeply the kitchen cares about its ingredients. We also tried the much-talked-about Roast Spaghetti Squash & Braised Greens Enchiladas, and they did not disappoint. It's an inventive twist on comfort food, with squash, enchilada sauce, and cauliflower rice bringing together farm flavors in an unexpected way.

Overall the food was okay. However a few things: Service: When it came time to seat us, the attendants at the front told us we would wait 10 minutes before those with a reservation which was fine. It didn’t make any sense because the place was empty and continued to be even an hour after we finished. Our personal server was very sincere and accommodating however I saw a lot of other servers waiting around, singing and chatting like they had nothing to do. The food didnt come out immediately so it tells me they’re just not busy enough or don’t care enough. Food: We ordered the beet salad. The cheese came smeared on the side like someone just didn’t know how to present it. The arugula was wilted and there was barely on the plate. Maybe worth $10-15 because of the portion but we were charged $21. We also ordered the enchiladas. Maybe I have a bias here but the portion of the enchiladas was small, and the entire plate waaaay too bland. It was mostly grilled vegetables and flavorless. I ordered the short ribs. Again, maybe being Korean and having been to the best bbq places in LA make me expect more. The short ribs were thin, somewhat charred and tough. The portion again was thin. The cilantro was also not fresh and wilted.

The restaurant is lovely, located in a pleasant setting. We came in on a Friday evening for dinner, and the place had 50% open tables inside the restaurant and about 1/4 open tables outside. Hence, they were not packed. However, the service was extremely disappointing. It took the service team 5-10 minutes to clear the bar area from the previous guests for the two of us. As we waited at the bar for the clearing, numerous waitresses came by to wait for their alcoholic drinks to be prepared, and instead of clearing the bar for us, they stood around and chatted amongst each other. Then finally a busboy came by to clear the area, yet he only picked up about 2/3 of the dirty mess. So, we waited for some more. The bartender, busy as hell preparing drinks for the entire restaurant and the only employee working his tail off at that place, finally sacrificed 5 seconds to clear the rest. Mind you, there were 3 other guys behind the bar, but they were busy chatting it up with the other clients. The staff made sure everyone in the restaurant had plenty of water, as they dedicated at least one water server for that task, but that was it for any part of the service that was above average. Basically, the restaurant had plenty of hands on deck, but most were wasting time roaming/standing around and chatting. Nothing short of amateur hour, as it seemed the management hired people without any serving experience. We came for dinner, but stayed only for the drinks. We will definitely not be returning, until we hear the service...

On Saturday, July 26, 2025, I hosted a Sweet 16 at The Farmhouse for a party of 40 guests. From the very beginning, I worked closely with Miss Rocio—what an absolute gem! She is humble, kind, and incredibly responsive to calls, texts, and especially emails. Every detail was handled with care and precision. As an event planner, it’s rare to find someone so attentive and genuinely helpful—she made the entire planning process a joy.

On the day of the event, Chef Adam personally came out to introduce himself, and throughout the evening, we were taken care of by an outstanding team of managers, waiters, and waitresses. The service was truly top-notch—some of the best I’ve ever experienced.

The food was beyond exceptional. They worked with us to serve family-style for our group of 40, which can be a challenge, but they pulled it off seamlessly. From the salads to the main courses to dessert, every bite was delicious and beautifully presented. The attention to detail was evident in everything.

Chef Adam, Rocio, and the entire staff—thank you for making the event such a success. You completely blew me away, and that means a lot coming from someone who has been in the hospitality industry for over 20 years. I highly recommend The Farmhouse and look forward to working...
