Absolutely outstanding! The Texas Heroes Museum in La Grange is a hidden gem that every history lover—and every Texan—should experience. Housed in the beautifully preserved Old Fayette County Jail, this museum is a moving tribute to the men and women who have served Texas and the nation, from the days of the Texas Revolution to the present day. The building itself is a piece of history, and stepping inside feels like traveling back in time. The exhibits are thoughtfully curated, featuring fascinating artifacts, uniforms, and stories of legendary figures like Audie Murphy and Chris Kyle, as well as honoring local heroes, law enforcement, firefighters, and first responders. One of the highlights is being able to walk into an original jail cell—a hit with both kids and adults! The museum also houses the Bob Lain Memorial Library, an impressive collection of military history books that adds even more depth to the experience. What truly sets this museum apart is the passion and knowledge of the volunteer staff. Our docent, Charlie, was incredibly friendly and engaging, sharing personal stories and historical insights that brought the exhibits to life. The pride in La Grange’s history is evident in every detail, and the free admission (with donations encouraged) makes this a must-visit for families and history buffs alike. If you’re in La Grange, don’t miss this wonderful museum. It’s a heartfelt, educational, and memorable stop that honors Texas heroes in the best possible way. Five stars, without a doubt!

This holds weekend hours only, which is not a problem at all because it is walking distance to and from free parking and TONS of historical architecture nearby. The gates were open, it's a small place, and there was a clean, cooled, public restroom available on-site. We took a stroll regardless of the business hours and look forward to coming back and exploring the nearby businesses as well. Such a great city square!

This museum is very interesting. It was also a living museum when I visited it as I had the great pleasure of being able to speak with retired Rear Admiral John Koenig who served as assistant to Admiral Rickover. I was able to verify many of the stories I had heard about Admiral Rickover. Thank you for this amazing experience I had.

My husband and I travel around Texas, so by traveling a lot we come across many museums. I have to say that this was the best "little town" museum that we have ever been to. Trust me, I have been to a lot of museums around the state, and this one takes the cake. First off, the museum is in an old jail, it had a very nice curb appeal to it. The inside of the museum is just as nice as the exterior. Our tour guide was named Jackie, he was very proud showing each artifact and excited to share the history of the museum. Because of his energy, we were even more excited to listen to him talk about the museum. If you are ever going through La Grange or going on a day trip to this place, I would highly recommend stopping here. Also, I would recommend stopping here before you go to Monument Hill (which is only 6 mins away) so you can have deeper understanding of what our Texas Heroes...

History museum = sounds boring right? Wrong...My husband and I took our two younger children ages 7and 8. The docent who gave us the tour was incredibly nice and knowledgeable. This is a fantastic educational place to visit. Much to my surprise the kids liked it too. It is filled with so much history and I learned a thing or two myself. I recommended taking the family and don't forget to sign the register so that our history museums can get the funding they need to keep going. It is a great experience...
