Popular beach for locals, but it’s a must visit for one-of-a-kind nature experience: a dog beach, a human beach, a couple piers that jet out into the lake, a natural dune, bird sanctuary, butterfly sanctuary, bike trails, hiking trails, long lakefront views, boating dock, fields of grass to just relax and people watch, bird watch, nature watch and more. Read moreWe traveled an hour here so we could avoid the north avenue beach crowd, Montrose was fine although ever few yards some water sport race was being held and we were told to get out of the water about every ten minutes for the kids to compete. I don’t see why they would even allow the beach to be open to the public if they knew it would be littered with races and those not competing would be yelled at by rude life guards and evacuated from the water every few minutes, but I guess that’s just bad management.
