On yet another of my many road trips, I visited this location. Before I proceed with the review, I have to say it is dedicated to the good Samaritan that stopped to help me when my vehicle stalled in traffic. We eventually got it off to the side of the road after "most" of the traffic stopped immediately to let us over. We discussed what was going on and I said that there couldn't be but one thing impacting it as he agreed from what he heard, the gas I'd gotten on my way through or my gas pump. So, I asked if he knew of a store where I could get some started fluid so I could start it (as it is carburated) and being the gentle he was he went off to find some with no luck at his first stop. He came back to find that another helper had arrived and thankfully he did since he advised him where to find the started fluid. He left again; came back with it and I unlocked my hood and removed the breather cover and sprayed it down into the carb's throat. She growled a coupled of times before eventually giving us that sweet sound of success! I let it run for a bit and gleefully thank him - Shephard - his name a soon found out at the end of this ordeal; then took his advice on a store to locate the fuel additive I needed to clean out the gas we suspected was causing me problems. In Shephard's words, he stopped because he didn't want to see someone stranded and he knew that this could be him one day and hopes that some one would help him if he needed it...Shephard, I don't think you'll have to worry about that good begets good!!! So, as a tribute to all that is good about the Delta and the South in general...I'll share my thoughts on this local natural gem in MS. It is a wonder springtime and early summer fishing location that one should definitely venture out to on lazy days and get in some good crappie fishing. If you are an "out of towner" make sure you have your state visitors pass/permit. If you just want to enjoy a stroll along Deer Creek, it's great in the evenings and early to mid-day. The town decorates the decorative floats for certain holidays so if you like sight-seeing check that out during that time of the year. We are the Delta, some times called the Dirty Delta, the Dirty South, the Flat Lands, what ever name you want to call it, it's a place filled with kind people doing kind things and it has natural treasures that you should take the time to enjoy - Loving the South for all she has Southern Outdoors Unveiling...
Read moreMy family and I happened upon the birth place of Kermit the Frog completely by accident. We were driving through Mississippi as part of a 2.5wk vacation through the Southeast and I saw a sign for the Kermit museum and insisted we veer off course - I grew up watching the Muppets and Kermit was my all time favorite! My kiddos share my enthusiasm for Kermit.
The museum itself didn’t offer much - it’s more of an exhibit of the muppets and Jim Henson’s life in Leland. It’s definitely geared towards little ones and it appears to be all volunteer based, which was fine. It’s just an extremely small building, with one main room and 2 smaller rooms off of that. They had a lot of Muppet-based memorabilia and we took a picture with a giant Kermit, which was kitchy and cute. The place was clean and clearly well kept, but it had an antique shop -sort of cluttered - feel to it. There was a video viewing/reading room for little ones and we watched the original Rainbow Connection on loop - but it’s one of my favorites, so I didn’t mind (I danced with my dad at my wedding to the Sarah McLachlan version - highly recommend this version).
We talked to the woman behind the counter for a few minutes, bought a cute little ornament, and then went off to explore Leland. And then... we drove across the Rainbow Connection bridge... and I got teary eyed remembering all the times I watched Kermit with my dad.
All in all, Leland in the summer, plus the hometown museum, gave me all the feels. It’s not a spectacular spot that you would plan a trip around, but it was a wonderfully nostalgic hour that I shared with my family. I know for certain my kids will “accidentally” visit this place in their travels when they’re older - and I’m no longer around - just to feel the magic. 🌈
I gave this 4 ⭐️s because Leland was beautiful and we enjoyed walking around the area. We took some cute pictures to treasure, and it was a perfect pit stop on a long drive. However, the feelings of pure nostalgia are worth...
Read moreIf I could leave this museum a million stars, I would. It's a cozy building with plenty of air conditioning and beautiful scenery surrounding it. Walking around the grounds, you can really feel the magic and understand why the area inspired Jim Henson. Inside, a collection of artifacts and items sent in by fans alongside displays detailing Jim Henson's childhood in the Delta serve as a love letter to his creative work and all the people it touched. If you have a small child, it's a great place to stop for a spell, as there's a small room with Henson shows playing. There's a wonderful gift shop with very reasonably priced handmade souvenirs and cute plushes, puppets, and clothing.
But my favorite part of the museum now is a personal association: I got engaged there! Ever since I was a child, I wanted to visit the birthplace of Kermit the Frog after reading about it on a muppet blog. When I met my now-fiance, the very first thing we talked about was Labyrinth. So, when he took me to the museum for the first time, fulfilling my childhood dream, he proposed to me there! The wonderful manager at the museum, Ms. Heather, coordinated the whole thing with him, and she was so kind to us. This is a special place run by special people, and you should definitely make a stop there if you're...
