Its great for the dogs, BUT beware, the Johnson County Park Police are very active in this parking lot, they sit along the road in the overflow dog park lot to speed trap people coming around a blind curve down a hill, and as you know your car can pick up speed without you noticing coming down a hill, you break into the open where the radar sees you right at the bottom of the hill right before a sharp turn up the hill. I've seen them nail quite a few people, they nailed me last year at the Disc golf course on my first day ever visiting, and wrote me a 200 dollar speeding ticket on my first time ever being in the park and visiting from 400 mi away and not realizing there was a really unconscionably and punitively low 25 mph speed limit in this park with few speed limit signs warning you. I guess they need the revenue to pay the cops to sit and speed trap people all day. The cops are pretty young, like early 20s, and they all have a pretty gung ho unbending attitude like they are competing for most tickets issued today or something. The one that wrote me that speeding ticket was actually pretty verbally abusive. Also, when they are speed trapping the dog park they will wait for dog owners to come out of the offleash park to their cars having not releashed their dogs for the 20 feet to the car, and write tickets for that, 80 bucks a pop, I sat and defended a guy and saw his ticket one time. I swear I've seen them swoop in out of nowhere sometimes and just get in people's faces. I realize JOCO needs revenue to run this park but the Park Police here are really kind of out of control. They have a captive audience because it's a fantastic large green area and has a good trail system. Bad cops, bad...
Read moreGreat Park! but beware when you come here, the Park Police. They are really the Park Speed Trap Brigade, all really young officers and all very rude and abrasive people. Also they profiteer in the dog park parking lots trying to give tickets to dog owners who open their car doors and their dogs jump out before they get them leashed, that's an 80 dollar ticket per dog. I've seen them do it a number of times, they sit in a hiding spot along the trees and come driving it when it happens. Re speed trapping, they sit in the spots where they know your car picks up speeds and try to radar you at the bottom of a hill, two of their favorite speed traps are the bottom of the hill right before the dog park coming in off 87th and or entering from that side. They sit in the dog park parking lot and point at the bottom of the hill and they get someone every time. Also over by Frisbee Golf course then sit in a median around a blind corner coming down a hill and trap you as you round the corner at the bottom of a hill. The philosophy seems to be, build a great park to lure in area residents, then set an unreasonably low 25 mph speed limit and require leashing of dogs outside the dog park between car and gate, then sit back while 4 young aggressive unpleasant officers rake in the dough by picking trap points where they know your car will pick up speed...

My dog is a yellow lab, who had surgery as a puppy for bone spurs. She had calcium deposits in her bones. So if you don’t know what spurs are, they feel like shards of glass in her back legs that also make her over weight because exercise is limited. We took her to the dog beach today, and I was Absolutely appalled that we had to park and walk so far. With all of the land that they own, they should open up that gate and allow parking closer, for dogs with disabilities. Require a note from the vet- or whatever it takes. That long walk there and back, took all the pads off her feet. There was blood all over her, my car. She had to stop a dozen times because her legs were giving out. I ran To the top to try to get my car with a ramp but of course it’s locked for no good reason.
I am Ashamed of Shawnee mission lake. Our families spend all summer every summer out there. Fishing, boating, swimming.
There is so many dogs with disabilities and water therapy is great for their joints. I hope In the very near future- they do something about this. Because I wont Stop. Offer golf carts, you pay to take it and return it back. Something. Anything. You offer handicap parking, but a lot of good that does when it’s a mile hike...
