I'm one of those people who wishes I was Italian. Two of my all-time favorite movie scenes are the closing, kitchen table conversation from "Moonstruck," and the Henry & Karen Hill wedding from "Goodfellas." The closest I've come to being one of those characters myself happened most recently during two visits to Livonia's Italian American Club. At a wedding some months ago, I ate and drank like Vincent Gardenia, and danced to and sang along with Louis Prima and the like until my inner Joe Pesci poured out of me in all its little big man glory ("I wish I was big (read 'Italian') just once!"). At a weekend dinner more recently, I rubbed elbows with my girlfriend's enormous circle of totally Italian friends and family, and all the old time and neighborhood chat, love and laughter such talk so charmingly always entails. What never fails to impress me about Italian culture are the layers of generational respect woven through it. Elders are treasured and held in high esteem for their wealth of acquired wisdom, and looked to for everyday advice. Everyone takes their turn saying hello to everyone. Family and friends are valued above all, and from food and favorite old stories and remembrances to shared laughter and tears, everyone adds something to the communal pot and brings it to the table to be shared sincerely when they get together. Listen, I'm Polish. And I know good Irish, German, Arab, Jewish and Greek folk and such can make as good a claim to old world family values as any cultural clan can. All I know is that visiting this Italian American Club takes me back to a time and place when people truly appreciated the simple pleasures of socializing. Here's to what truly satisfies and fills us heart and soul: Good food and a little wine to go with it, washed down with the pure Ambrosia of great company (friends and...

Read moreMy husband's 80th birthday party was extra special on December 23, 2023 because the service provided at this venue was second to none. The Italian marble embraces you as you enter the grand foyer. The ballroom along with the restrooms were immaculate. Many guests commented about the cleanliness of the restrooms. The food was delicious and plentiful. Staff were prompt with replenishing food to ensure that all guests enjoyed every item on the menu. Collaborating with Kathy was easy and stress free during the planning phases. She went above and beyond to make this a memorable occasion for my husband. The esthetics were charming, the food was good but what impressed me most was the pleasant and helpful staff members. One of my guests had a portable oxygen machine with a cord that couldn't reach the nearby electrical outlet. A staff member was notified and immediately dropped what they were doing. Within minutes she returned with a long extension cord that could reach the outlet. My guest was at ease and happy. I was elated to know that the staff member responded quickly and with a smile. Choosing this venue for such a milestone year was a WIN/WIN for everyone. My husband was happy and that made me happier. I highly recommend this venue if you're looking for a stellar dining experience with beautiful esthetics, great food and caring staff...
