I drove by this part of the canal all the time.. until recently, I realized there is a parking area right off RT 15 to access the C&O Canal trail. The entrance to the park is imediately on your right after turning off RT 15. Once entered the park, turn right when you see the wooden bridge on your right. Drive over the railroad tracks and onto the single lane wooden bridge. At first, I wasn't sure if the bridge was for cars, and I got a little scared while driving onto it. Then once I drove past the bridge, I saw the parking lot. What a relief. The parking lot is a good size for about 50 cars or maybe a little less with handicap spaces. It also has 2 unisex restrooms that are handicap accessible with only a toilet, and toilet paper is provided. There is a sign in the bathroom informing people not to place trash in the toilet, because it will be difficult to remove. Please take trash with you.
At the other end of the parking lot, away from the wooden bridge, is where the boat ramp on the left and the entrance to the trail on the right. If you turn left on the trail, there is where the Point Of Rocks train tunnel is, and the trail goes under the RT 15 bridge. If you turn left onto the trail, it is where the VRE train station is.
The trail is very clean and it was very quiet when I visited today on Veterans Day 2017. There were a couple of cyclists and a few people walking the trail during our 1 mile walk.
If you are in the area, turn right after exiting the park, away from RT 15, and drive a mile to the Rocky Point Creamery on your right. It is...
Read moreBeautiful trail, with lots of wildlife. Plenty of cute turtles of all sizes and fish of all sizes. I was obsessed with the Fledgling birds they were beautiful and intriguing! There were ducks with their little chicks! Just motivational for a run hike or anything in between especially when the trail opened up after a couple of miles and there was water on both sides. Only downside was lots of bugs I was scared to breathe through my mouth when I picked up my speed.
They have restrooms and food trucks! Overall I will be back here for longer...
Read moreGreat ride from Whites Ferry to Point of Rocks. I found it to be very scenic. The Trail runs with the Potomac on one side and the remains of the C&O Canal on the other. Remains of several locks and a lock keepers house are on the route. Trail is packed gravel that is in excellent condition. I have very narrow (700x35C) tires on my bicycle and they worked fine on the trail. There is good tree cover for much of the ride. It is very beautiful and one section probably looks about the same as it did...
