If you like the beach and a bit of hiking/walking, this location won't disappoint. Bathrooms are provided, free of course, a bit dated but, always clean when we go. Full size bathrooms, no porta-pots here, which is nice. If you are a avid hiker that looks for a challenge, find another place. Location is great. Plenty of paved parking. An assortment of things to do. There is a few nice trails, short, less than two miles, but enjoyable. Most of the trails are boardwalk style, which gives it a unique feel. The walkway is a few feet above the ground with most snaking through a heavy tree environment which gives a tunnel effect as one walks through. If you like the beach, one trail goes directly along the ocean. It has an old war bunker which is neat to see. I do NOT recommend that one for any person that may have limitations, may tire easily, or has a hard time with steps. Although there is no actual steps, the beach sand is very deep and once you are on that trail it's a good quarter mile in rough sand back to the parking lot. If you want to see the war bunker without going on the long trail just head to the ocean from the parking lot, it's close. There is a small info center with stuff to look at and just a few quick steps away is a light house that you can climb for free. Great location for pics as the view is high above. There are plenty of tables for eating, gathering and or just relaxing. Covered of course. During summer, you can find a ice cream vendor stationed in the parking lot next to the front. Which is great for grabbing a snack. If you have kids it should keep them happy for a bit. We go during the week, less busy, and the vendor is there so would assume there during weekend as well. Read moreSmall fee to climb the lighthouse but it's the best view around.
The small museum is free and they offer good insight to local history and the animals of the local ecosystem. The park offers loads of hikes and birds watching events if you check their website.
There are some lawn areas where you can picnic but you'll want to bring your own shade.
The beach is easily accessible from the parking lot but it's a good distance to the water. Nice beach for sun and getting in the water.
There are several trails through the wetlands and those have plenty of shaded areas, but as they get close to the beach, there's no cover. The trail has long sections of elevated boardwalks wide enough for a wheelchair in the wettest places so you can walk most of them even after a rain. No ramps further in though. There are lots of sandy areas that can be a bit soft and are fine to walk but aren't really wheelchair friendly.
The trails allow access to the beach at both ends. But the beach can be a looooong walk through the soft sand to the parking lot if you get out at the far end of the trail, especially if you have little ones. If you want the beach, better to use the access right at the parking lot.
There are restrooms (buildings, not port-a-johnny's) and water fountains by the lighthouse parking lot too. No fountains or bathrooms in the...
Read moreAny state park is nice and pretty, but Cape May Point State Park is outstanding. They offer a lot here. 1st of all, there is a very well taken care lighthouse which you climb for $12 per person. They have a rescue boat as an exhibition on the lighthouse premises. Huge free parking lot. Covered picnic area with several picnic tables. Cooking grills in front of picnic area. Birds houses, more like birds apartments in the parking lot. Free clean bathrooms. Visitor center. Mainly, free access to the beach, which is close to rare in New Jersey, but you can not swim there. There are no life guards That was absolutely fine with us. We weren't planning on swimming anyway. we just wanted to sit on the beach and enjoy the sounds of the crashing waves. Also, I believe there are walking trails in this park, but we didn't go there. Overall experience was great. If we are in Cape May, we'll probably pay another visit to the park. Highly recommend place to see. Cape May, New...
