Macon is Rich with history, and Fort Hawkins is the birthplace of Macon. The little museum is full of artifacts discovered at the site and a mural of an 1812 battle makes a great photo background. Its all gated so all we could see were the fort structures and the historical markers. The fledgling visitor's center has helpful information and exhibits, and one of the volunteers will give you a tour of the three-story replica blockhouse, itself a piece of history since it was built from concrete to mimic the original wood in 1937-1938 as one of FDR's Works Progress Administration projects.
