The best snorkeling on Maui! Amazing coral and lava formations. Lots of fish. We saw about 25 turtles swimming around or sleeping under ledges. Definitely wear dive boots if you enter via the empty lot across from the parking. There are big rocks and lots of tiny sea urchins that will wreck your bare feet. If you're looking for an easier way to get to the water (besides a boat tour), go down the street to the beach. It will be a longer swim to the good snorkeling area, but easier to get in and out.
There are long lava flows that go out from the rock points you see on land. They are covered with coral and also have some interesting ledge under them to explore if you're able to dive down 20 feet and hold your breath.
As for the caves, maybe I missed them. I saw a few small swim throughs and deep ledges, but that's it. I plan on going back later with my scuba gear since the water does drop off...
Read moreRocky beaches with some difficulty walking from alcove to alcove if your not watching where you plant your feet. Really cool snorkeling area with plenty of marine life, including sea turtles (we saw 4 the day we went). If you take the time to find coupons online for snorkeling rentals we found it worth it for saving. Getting in/out was a little daunting in some areas, be weary of sea urchins as we found them in the shallows and from above water they blend in with the slippery rocks. Public access to this region is obscured by residential construction but is directly across from gravel parking area (although it seems some parked at Makena Landing and swam...
Read moreWe snorkelled here. Although the entry looked somewhat dangerous, with sharp lava rocks, it turned out to be easier than it looked. From there we snorkelled all around the point and saw an abundance of fish and coral as well as three sea turtles. Added bonus, there was almost no one else around (visited in November). Very cool spot and very doable for our novice group of...
