Most of the Go Ape staff are great, but there was one bad apple. Constance Connelly was the instructor on 8/23 at 9 a.m., the session that I went.
Constance was very clever. She was polite to me in the demonstration area close to the cabin, when there was another instructor around. However, as soon as she led us to the practice course in the wooded area (Course #1), which is far from the cabin, and there was no other co-worker present (only customers present at this point), her entire demeanor changed toward me, since she knew there was no longer any coworker from Go Ape around to witness her behavior.
She started viciously attacking me by screaming "WE'LL LET THE PERSON WHO CAME HERE BY HERSELF GO FIRST!!!" in a very loud and condescending tone. I'm a paying customer just like everyone else, she has no right to make me go first. More importantly, why is she highlighting that I came by myself??? How does she know that I came by myself?? I could have someone waiting in the car (park), she would not know that, and why is she screaming at me??? Also what is wrong with coming by myself??? I enjoy doing solo as well as group adventures.
Constance Connelly also FORGOT to tell us that the real course starts at #2, since course #1 is the demonstration course, but she did not tell us, which sent us on a wild goose chase looking for #1.
Then the attack continued. When I was climbing, Constance would YELL at me, "NO, you are doing this wrong, you are doing that wrong" in a VERY HARSH AND VICIOUS TONE, which is completely uncalled for.
Because of the nonstop attack from Constance Connelly, which made me anxious and nervous, I rushed through the courses as fast as I could, and because it was also hot on that day, I got sick toward the end of the final course, and I threw up (vomiting), Constance came up and asked me if I had anything to eat for breakfast that morning, I answered yes, not knowing this was a trick question (trap), because then Constance had the audacity to call me a liar by saying, "Really? It's mostly liquid in there (in your vomit)." Implying that I lied about eating breakfast, that I actually did NOT have breakfast. Did she look closely at my vomit? Also what if I had something liquid for breakfast?? Also it's just ridiculous that she is trying THAT HARD to twist my words and make me look bad, more importantly, it takes a very low person to attack someone when they are down (sick). I never did anything to her, but she is somehow obsessed about attacking me, seizing even the final opportunity before I left because I was sick.
I called Go Ape 1-800 number to report Constance Connelly, I was told Constance left in September, which was soon after my "memorable" visit. I guess that's why she didn't care when attacking me, because she knew she was leaving...
Read moreThe Go Ape Treetop Adventure Course at the Woodland Discovery Playground at Shelby Farms is a thrill seeker's paradise!
It's the first Go Ape course in Tennessee.
The zip-line, obstacle course and canopy tour hangs around and above the park's Pine Lake nearly FIVE STORIES HIGH.
The six courses include rope ladders, 41 crossings, 2 Tarzan swings, and 6 zip lines (5 over Pine Lake).
For $57, you can walk among the tree tops on a three and a half-hour tour.
When you arrive, you fill out some paperwork saying that you assume the risk that you're about to take.
You get a safety instructor who harnesses you and walks you through the rules of the course.
You start with a run-through - feet on the ground - and before you go on any father, you're reminded again that you are about to take part in a "high-risk activity." LOL. Yikes!
Course 1 is like a practice before you hit the big zip line over the lake. Course 1 is a few feet off the ground and gives you a taste of what's to come. A mini zip-line.
On Course 2, you climb a ladder to the top of the trees. Once you make this climb, there's pretty much no going back.
The climb continues through more obstacles to the big zip line that's 450-feet long!
The most intense obstacle for me was that small zip line that takes you to a rope wall that you climb to the next obstacle. You feel like there's almost nothing between you and the sky.
The actual zip-line over the lake is SO AMAZING! I felt like I was FLYING! So exhilarating!
This activity is a must, if you like physical activity and wind in your hair.
The courses continue as you zig zag over the lake.
Course 2 is perhaps the most challenging.
Be sure to wear comfortable clothing you don't mind getting dirty, drink plenty of water and have fun!

Read more10/10 would recommend! We did the treetop adventure and axe-throwing AND LOVED EVERY BIT OF IT. I had done zip-lining before, and I had done a ropes course before, but never before had I done a ropes course AMONG THE TREES and zip-lining OVER WATER.
What I liked most is how you have to trust your body with this. You’re always securely attached to the trolley line, so the risk of serious injury is low if you do it right. But that doesn’t mean you won’t get a little banged up in the process. After all, you’re participating in an inherently risky activity despite the myriad guardrails. I am short (just under 5ft) with some…extra padding shall we say…so the crossings were more difficult for me than for my husband (5’6” and lanky). In particular, I got a little overzealous about a ropes crossing and got stuck because my arms gave out halfway through. Lol! So I had to ask for help, and Matt Fascio was my wonderful hero. Hubby and I continued through the rest of it (drinking water at each stop!!) until the Tarzan swing. I REALLY wanted to do the swing, but I knew my arms would give out again (yes, 0% upper-body strength) so I opted for the moderate path. But the same thing happened on that final ropes crossing and Jake (the guy who trained us at the start) had to fish me out and pull me up to the platform. I was sooo embarrassed, but he said it happens all the time and he was very professional throughout. That made me feel better. We finished the treetop course at about 3.0 hours exactly and enjoyed a final zip-line over the water.
We then rewarded ourselves with an hour of axe-throwing, but we only stayed 25 of 60 minutes because we were EXHAUSTED after the ropes course and couldn’t throw the axes lolololol. But our guide Matthew was such a sweetie who made our experience more fun. (Word to the wise: do the axe-throwing FIRST. Also, eat breakfast that morning because you will expend more energy than normally.)
This was a workout for sure, but it was so much fun. I’m gonna take a few rest days, and then hubby and I are going back because I WILL conquer that Tarzan swing.
(N.B. The photo is of trees in my backyard. We didn’t take photos at the park so this is the best I...
