Rest in Peace Old Mule!
The Mule is a classic stop on the Mother Road! The kindly old man has since left (hopefully he has retired and has not passed on). With the old man having left, the Mule is now a modern and heavily sanitized version of it's former self.
The Mule used to have loads of kitsch, character's and the ambiance unique to tourist traps on 66. Me and my wife used to stop here all the time when cruising the Route.
Sadly, I'm not so sure we will any longer. My hats off to the current owner(s), they have renovated it completely all the clutter and detritus is completely gone. The store is clean and uncluttered and stocked with a wide assortment of touristy stuff and more ,they say, on the way.
Edited to say thanks to the current owners for keeping this venerable institution alive and open for a new generation to behold. I hope fans of the Mother Road from all over the world will patronize this location! It would be a shame to see what happened in Fanning...
Read moreWe are doing the whole Route 66 from Chicago to LA, and following the EZ66 guide by Jerry McClanahan, where in the area we was up to he mentions the Mule Trading Post.
It's also on a dead end stretch of the ole 66 so easy to park up.
Indside we was greeted by a friendly lady, and it was about 4.45pm in the day and we was very quiet to browse.
Great place for 66 souvenirs, but also this a shop for local residents for hunting tackle, such as knives,swords etc.
Very reasonable priced route 66 gifts too. Highly...

I was really disappointed. The lady who's worked here for 15 years was awesome to talk to and hear stories of the old setup.
