Updated Review 8/2025: Charles Wood Mobile Japanese Gardens is officially open again. There are a lot of changes. Some you'll love, some you might hate, some will grow on you. The new trail is 100% handicapped accessible. It runs about 1.6 miles from beginning to the current end (I'll explain in a bit). Parking has expanded and is fantastic. There are even water stations around for both people and pets. The best part, you can walk the trail to about 800ft to the train trellis! Just be careful, it isn't fully accessible. Yet. There are some changes to the small walk from the stairs and between the ponds. And the walk to the bridgeway. No, they did not make a formal trail to the waterfall. It is fairly overgrown at the moment. But! There are new trails to the creek further down the new trail! And plenty of off the walk areas to really use for those ready to be extra creative. The trail itself is beautifully shaded and much cooler than main areas up front. Things to come. Lights! And cameras tied directly to MPD. The city expects these fully operational by fall. They are working with he railroad to get approval to continue the trail under the train trellis. Until that is approved and done that area is an at your own risk spot. New Segment of Three Mile Creek Greenway Now Open!
A newly completed stretch of the Three Mile Creek Greenway Trail is now open near the Charles Wood Japanese Garden in Mobile, Alabama. This 0.75-mile addition expands the western end of the growing trail system, offering a smooth path for walking, running, and biking along the creek.
The trail is part of a nearly 7-mile linear park project designed to connect neighborhoods, parks, and green spaces across the city. The area around the Japanese Garden has also been upgraded with improved parking and pedestrian access.

Read moreI love this place, ever since I "discovered" it last year in the blistering heat. It was beautiful big Lilly ponds, flowers all around a mini "waterfall" to wildflowers and turtles, and koi galore there is so much to see. I recently went again and took my camera now the snakes are out saw a 4ft long ratsnake and a couple black racers, It really is a great place to get away for a bit and just keep to yourself and think. I just wish it was more kept up. It desperately needs a cut and weeding and it has so much potential, and to think it's right here in Mobile. Wish I could actually help out with it.
