If you’re looking for an incredible (but lesser-known) trail, consider hiking to Bubble Rocks. This trail goes to two separate viewpoints called South Bubble and North Bubble that overlook Jordan Pond from up top.
In addition to being a wonderful viewpoint, South Bubble also has a famous tourist attraction: Bubble Rock (aka. Balanced Rock). a large boulder that was carried by glaciers (yes! you read it right) and deposited at the seemingly precarious edge of a cliff. it is considered to be the best-known boulder in the entire state of Maine
The hike from the Bubbles parking lot to Bubble Rock is a short family-friendly adventure. Bubble Rock and the 768-foot peak of South Bubble can be reached via the Bubbles Divide Trail and Bubbles Trail. The Bubbles trailhead and the parking lot are located on Park Loop Road, just over a mile south of Bubble Pond and about 1.5 miles north of Jordan Pond House.
Just beyond the side trail to Bubble Rock, are wonderful views of Jordan Pond, Pemetic Mountain, Penobscot Mountain, as well as the ocean off...
Read moreBubble Rock is, of course, iconic and beautiful. But the park administration has made it extremely difficult to reach by suspending the bus stop at the parking lot by the main trail head. Because parking is almost impossible we were forced to walk a mile from Jordan Pond to the other trail. Described by the Island bus person as "family friendly" it was, as it turned out, one of the most difficult trails in the entire park. The "carry trail" was scary and very tough for everyone. No way could we go down that way, so we had to go down the regular way to the parking lot, where we were stranded for a ride. We had to call a friend to pick us up to take us back to our cars at the Visitors Center. So, great mountain, awful trail, service and advice. We've been coming to Acadia for over 40 years, so we'll stick to the less...
Read moreMy Wife and I hiked from the Jordan pond path, to the steep step path. Most people should be able to handle this path. Be warned there is a lot of rock stepping, and once at the top you will have to climb up a few small areas. I had seen people take dogs along this path, but I do not recommend it as you will have to lift them up on some sections. This wont be bad with smaller dogs but larger dogs could prove to be problematic. Once atop you can see Jordan pond, and make sure you visit bubble rock. I am quite capable of pushing this rock over the edge, but do not want to disrupt the area for future visitors. If you find yourself at bubble rock, please do not push it over the edge. It has been there a long time, and deserves to stay...
