I hate giving such a low rating because it is a school and they’re learning, but I normally go to another beauty school for my hair services and they are amazing. So, there is no excuse for gci Students to be as unprofessional and untrained as they are. Don’t get me wrong their are a few students that are great and seem to actually have a good future in cosmetology( that’s why I’m giving 2 stars instead of 1), but with most of my visits here I don’t think this school well trains their students. A lot of them do not know how to do ethnic hair and get offended when you let them know that they did something wrong or they get mad when they are booked with someone that has ethnic hair. I feel you should know how to do all types of hair and not just people with the same texture as you if you want to be a hair stylist. Another problem I had, I booked an appointment the day before their thanksgiving break and I called to make sure I was still okay to come. I was told that the person I was booked with is there. So I show up and I’m told the girl I was booked with hasn’t showed up yet and that they can’t make their students show up and a lot of them don’t show up the day before a break. So I was told they give their students a 15 minutes grace period and that I could wait to see if she shows up (she didn’t show up of course). While I was waiting another client came in about 5-10 minutes after I had already been waiting and the lady at the desk said she had just called him to let him know his stylist for his granddaughter hasnt come in yet but to give her 15 minutes as well so we’re both waiting and after 15 minutes she said that I would have to rebook but she gave an available stylist to the other client who’s granddaughter was getting the same service as me. My appointment was A) before theirs was scheduled and B) I had been waiting way longer and thought it was unfair that I had to rebook for a week later after being told their wasn’t anyone available to do my hair that night but then seeing her find someone to do this other girls hair after they only waited for about 5 minutes. Like I said this usually isn’t my salon of choice anyway because of things I’ve heard so giving them a couple of chances validated the things I’ve heard about the service of...
Read moreI booked an appointment for a gel manicure and spa pedicure. I understand these are students and that they are still learning, so I had lower expectations than at a nail salon, but I was still disappointed.
For the pedicure I sat on an uncomfortable bench. The student messed up on my polish and tried to smooth it out with thick layers of top coat. I asked her to take off the polish and redo it, which she did, but the polish is still very smudged. She did not use a pumice stone (she didn't even know what it was when I asked) on my feet, which was disappointing. She did not do anything for the skin on my feet, and did not use hot towels on my legs, which the receptionist said was included in the spa pedicure.
When she started on my manicure, the gel polish was very runny and was not curing under the light. She didn't seem to have a clue what to do, so another student next to us asked what product she used under the gel. Apparently she skipped a step. The student next to us ended up painting a few of my nails. She had to do multiple coats since the gel was super thin. She applied the top coat of gel super thick and it got onto my skin, so the next day it started peeling off. During the manicure, I could hear the other students sitting next to us talking and using strong language, which was not professional.
Through the whole experience, an instructor never came over to observe or ask if she had any questions or what I thought of the experience. I had anticipated getting a survey at the end so that the instructors could know how the students did, but I did not get anything. The student who worked with me was one month away from graduation, but from my viewpoint, she does not have all the knowledge I would expect from a nail technician.
The positive aspect was that I paid a much lower price than at a nail salon. The negatives were that I was uncomfortable and the experience was not relaxing. The end results were slightly worse...
Read moreI am currently a student here at Georgia Career Institute at the Murfreesboro location. When I first decided to go to cosmetology school, I still wasn't really quite sure if that is what I wanted to do for my career. On my first day, I figured we'd be doing book work or listening to lectures like in a typical college class. Instead, we were practicing relaxers, roller sets, etc. and that was just on the first day! The instructors here are incredible. Not only do they help you with anything and everything you may need to know related to the field, they are also there to help on a personal level when things get tough and you just need someone to talk to. We just recently moved to a new facility that is even more beautiful and professional-looking than any salon I've ever been in. We as students also get to help each other out, whether it's helping foil a clients hair or just teaching different techniques. I feel like I personally learn better that way. Once you're about to graduate, the instructors and admissions directors are more than willing to help with finding jobs once you have your license. I couldn't have imagined coming to a better school for cosmetology than Georgia Career Institute. Now that I only have a few short school days left before I graduate and am out in the big girl world, I realize how much I am going to miss the lifelong friends I have made here and the instructors and other staff members who have helped make my dream of becoming a...
