Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse — Attraction in New Castle

Portsmouth harbor lighthouse has rich history and you can get to visit this lighthouse on Sunday between 1 to 5pm with a guided tour. Brilliant views all around and can spot the whaleback lighthouse from here. Both these lighthouses are 50 feet tall. PHL was earlier built with wood and is now reconstructed with cast iron. Whaleback light is built with granite to withstand high tides. The light on top of the PHL is made using fresnel lens and it is FG - fixed green. In the guided tour you can get to light it up, it operates on light sensors. Parking here is free and a minimal fee or donation for an adult is 4$ which is very much worth it. Absolutely gorgeous view! I walked along the walkway and you can even have a nice picnic on the grass or even bring some food to toss on the grill. You can walk down the dock to get alittle closer to the water. There's huge rocks you can climb across to try to look for sea creatures or seashells. When low tide you can climb down the rocks down to the beach. But once the ride comes up, I recommend you climb back up the rocks to the grass up above. You can see mountains behind the lighthouse and really a 180degree of beauty. Just stunning absolutely stunning! Closed at 4 pm on a weekday. We drove a long way to see it and were disappointed we could not at least walk up to it. You can see it from an alcove further down the shore about a 1/4 mile away.

We drove back the next morning at 10:30 and the gate was still locked. The sign says it is open from 8 am until 4 pm. We called a number listed for the Lighthouse and heard a recorded message about it being open in the afternoon.
