Portsmouth harbor lighthouse has rich history and you can get to visit this lighthouse on Sunday between 1 to 5pm with a guided tour. Brilliant views all around and can spot the whaleback lighthouse from here. Both these lighthouses are 50 feet tall. PHL was earlier built with wood and is now reconstructed with cast iron. Whaleback light is built with granite to withstand high tides. The light on top of the PHL is made using fresnel lens and it is FG - fixed green. In the guided tour you can get to light it up, it operates on light sensors. Parking here is free and a minimal fee or donation for an adult is 4$ which is very much worth it. The souvenir store has good collection of lighthouse themed keepsakes to take home with you. With us on this tour was a 90year old elderly person who could climb up atop of the lighthouse. Stairway leading to the...

Absolutely gorgeous view! I walked along the walkway and you can even have a nice picnic on the grass or even bring some food to toss on the grill. You can walk down the dock to get alittle closer to the water. There's huge rocks you can climb across to try to look for sea creatures or seashells. When low tide you can climb down the rocks down to the beach. But once the ride comes up, I recommend you climb back up the rocks to the grass up above. You can see mountains behind the lighthouse and really a 180degree of beauty. Just stunning absolutely stunning! I highly recommend anyone that loves to look at mother nature's beauty at its finest...go here! I will not let you down on this! It's peaceful and definitely puts a huge smile on anyone's face that's...

Closed at 4 pm on a weekday. We drove a long way to see it and were disappointed we could not at least walk up to it. You can see it from an alcove further down the shore about a 1/4 mile away.

We drove back the next morning at 10:30 and the gate was still locked. The sign says it is open from 8 am until 4 pm. We called a number listed for the Lighthouse and heard a recorded message about it being open in the afternoon. The polite coastguard officer told us it varies but that we could not get past the gate without a tour guide. My advice:. Call before you make the trip and talk to a...

We were able to get married at this majestic landmark! My wife and I reached out to the the amazingly accommodating non-profit organization Friend of the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse. They were very helpful and made our event planning super easy. On our day, Cynthia helped usher guest to the unique setting and worked to make the event go off without a concern. Fantastic space for a wedding, and truly remarkable photographs for a lifetime to cherish. Thanks again, Friends of the Portsmouth Harbor Lighthouse non-profit organization!

Nice place to visit on a crisp fall day. I’ve been into photographing lighthouses lately, and this was initially just a detour to get this lighthouse photo. While driving to the location, I noticed that the island of Newcastle, and even Portsmouth itself were really nice, and have a quaint appeal all their own; much like the lighthouse. There’s a small historic fort on the premises and a coast guard station (who operate the lighthouse). Definitely worth a day trip to Portsmouth to check out the lighthouse and the area.
