Our experience with the Sandia Peak Tramway was largely positive, with a few notable observations and tips for future visitors.
Ticketing and Personnel We purchased our tickets online, which was convenient, but tickets are also available for purchase at the tram station. It's worth noting that tickets are only valid for the day you buy them, but they are accommodating if the weather is bad, allowing you to use them on another day. Each ticket grants you a two-hour window for your trip. The staff at the tram station were friendly and helpful, answering all our questions efficiently.
The Ride When boarding the tram, aim to be either first or last in line. The operators cram as many people as possible into each tram car, so positioning yourself strategically can make for a more comfortable ride. Once onboard, the views during the transit and from the top are simply breathtaking. One downside during our ascent was that a lady passed out, but fortunately, the staff had oxygen on hand, and she recovered quickly.
Dress Appropriately Even though we visited during the summer, the temperature was in the late 40s at the peak. Many tourists were not dressed appropriately for the cold. I highly recommend bringing warm clothing regardless of the season.
Activities and Wildlife At the top, we embarked on a hike through the trees. It’s important to remember the path you take, as it can be easy to get lost among the trees. During our hike, we had the pleasure of spotting several woodpeckers.
Dining Options We intended to eat at the restaurant at the top, but the prices were exorbitant—$69 for a burger! We opted to eat the snacks we had brought with us instead. I would advise others to bring their own food if they do not wish to spend a small fortune on a meal.
Downhill Ride Our descent was less pleasant due to a loud female employee who, although not the driver, made the ride uncomfortable by instructing passengers to ignore the driver. This lack of professionalism detracted from the otherwise enjoyable experience.
Conclusion Despite a few hiccups, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Sandia Peak Tramway. The stunning views and enjoyable hike made it a memorable outing. I do recommend visiting, but be prepared for the weather and consider bringing your own food.
Overall, the Sandia Peak Tramway is a must-visit for those who appreciate natural beauty and don't mind a bit...
Read moreMy family and I went up on Tuesday August 7, 2023 around 1300 hrs and I think everyone should at least try this tram once or a few times in life. The area is beautiful on the mountain with some hiking trails that are pretty easy. It looks like a great place to ski during winter season.
The temperature really dropped so I would suggest a light jacket or rain jacket because it rained the day I went up with my family.
When heading up the mountain on the tram our guide named Terrance was very informative and always made sure to let us know of all the little bumps or jerks that happen along the tram adventure. Thank you for the great information and wonderful stories.
The ten3 restaurant was beautiful and pricy. My family and I got the ten3 margarita and if you like spicy this is for you. If you don’t like spicy I would definitely not recommend it.
As my family and I were leaving the signs didn’t seem clear on where we needed to go. As I proceeded to go through one of the barriers the staff employee named Vita yelled at me in front of other staff and customers and said not to go that way and to go around. Without giving a proper direction I went all the way around the building in the rain to the doors on the outside. This same employee Vita came to the doors and proceeded to yell at me again and accused me of leaving some gate open when I responded there was no gate that was closed for me to open. And said to go back through the barrier to the same side I was on originally and she proceeded to open it.
I asked this employee where do we need to go and she was much clearer by just telling us to wait on the side we were at and they would make an announcement. Again if the employees where in the area accessible there to answer questions I think this whole event would have been avoided.
The thought of this employee Vita yelling at customers because your not sure where to go is rude and embarrassing to the company as well as the customers and this who scenario could of been avoided and/or directed a different way.
I have added some pictures of the area but overall experience I...
Read moreOur decision to book this tram ride ruined our whole vacation. I really cannot recommend you DON’T DO the tram enough. We hit to the tram early allowing plenty of time knowing it was a very busy time of year for them. We planned up to an hour wait time but ended up waiting in line an hour and a half to get onto the tram. We were hoping to see the sun go down at the top but it took way to look of a wait so that wasn’t possible.
They loaded so many people onto the tram (I believe 40 people) that we could barely move without hitting anyone. It was like being sardines in a tin no joke. I tried my hardest to keep my hands as flat as I could against my sides so I wouldn’t bump anyone. I’m handicapped and there was only one seat on the tram and the seat was taken immediately. I could not see any of the view as I’m short and could not see out a single window with all the people. My boyfriend is much taller and also could not see out the windows.
The whole point of going on a tram is to view the beautiful view.. as soon as we got to the top the restaurant was closing in 10 minutes of when we arrived. We immediately ran over to the restaurant and were in the front of the line to get in but we were next in line when the host came out and said the restaurant was at capacity and we could not even go to the bar. We just wanted to grab a quick drink at the bar! The line was so long to go back down the mountain we decided just to get right back in line to go back down since our experience was so bad.
It took over an hour and a half for us waiting in line just to get back on the tram to go back down the mountain. By the time we got to the bottom of the mountain it had taken so long in lines there and back that we missed our dinner reservations we had planned for us when we got back off the mountain down below in town. We wasted hours of our vacation just waiting in line and it was a huge waste of money and our time. We were so sad we ever went on the tram. By the time we got home all the rest were closed or closing. It ruined our entire night and we regretted doing the...
