Williamsburg New York, has always been a haven for creatives. Back in the '80's and '90's, there were still lots of old abandoned factories. The area became a destination for artists of all stripes who were the only people daring enough and probably broke enough to be attracted to occupying spaces that the city had turned it's back on. There were no amenities, such as electricity, running water and heat, which nobody in their right mind would ever consider acceptable for living. Yet , it was those very conditions that attracted legions of artists who would transform the area and make it cool.
That old Williamsburg is now gone. The old factories and warehouses were torn down and replaced with new high rises, transforming the landscape. The artists community is gone and the area is now home to the gentrifiers.
Even though the neighborhood has experienced changes that did not favor the creative community who built it. The Commodore Barry Park is one of the positive aspects of that change. The city took an area along the East River that was once an overgrown no-man's land and transformed it into one of the most remarkable and scenic Parks in NYC, complete with a really cool children's playground and public space...
Read moreI love walking around, seeing people; connecting with others and exchanging smiles or a positive word. Every year during the 4th of July weekend there is the International African Arts Festival. It use to be held at Boys & Girls H.S. in BedSty, but now is held at Commodore Barry by the Bklyn Navy Yard. Vendors from all over the country and world come to showcase their works of creativity and art; whether it is wearable, home decor, or body, mind and health awareness you can find most of what you are looking for there. The Stage is vibrant with various entertainment, from poetry to dance, bringing relaxation, and rejuvenating hope especially after this past year of lockdown. The food court is savory and educational with its menus. When you get tired there are places to sit and relax before continuing your journey of exploration. This Festival is one of my traditions which I've been attending almost since its beginning when it was at the East, and will continue to do so as...
Read moreI do not know what to say about this extremely large field claiming to be park. There are absolutely no features at this location there is barely even anything to comment on. U would call it a dog park but there are no features to support an animal. Aside for the fact that it could be considered a Death Trap it is very very large with a few benches in random places. I would be terrified to come here alone and even smoke a cigarette. This area could improve if the residents put more thought into city counsel meeting in regards to codes of conduct and worked out ways to issue a few permits to local residents for open flame and so on. Permits are very useful in regards to local areas. At the very least the city could figure out ways to better appropriate funds. State And local assembly men can be accessed via there websites where you can send a basic notarized letter to each individual location. Both by mail and by email. The...
