I’m in the area about once a month and never stopped in. Usually because when I make the trip to BK I have a few things on the agenda so I stick to my schedule.
Well a few Saturdays ago I had some extra time after an appt and decided to see what the hype was about that was recently circling on social about Farmer in the Deli.
It should be noted that most of the hype was from tourists. As a native NYer (born & raised) deli sandwich from the corner stores (bodega or Ock) are not anything new to us. They are staples for both field and road trips. However, here they chop up all of your ingredients and mold it to fit your bread nicely.
There was a line and will probably always be a line but it moved fairly quick and the gentleman that assisted me was very pleasant and fast. I did my typical honey turkey and swiss with brown mustard, lettuce and tomatoes. I added black pepper, pickles, banana peppers and oil & vinegar. It was chopped and assembled on a roll. I grabbed a beverage and some chips.
Was the sandwhich was good?… Yes!
It’s my typical go-to ingredients for a sando at the bodega, so I didn’t expect anything different in that regard.
Was gentleman nice?… Yes Was the price decent?… Typical
Was it spectacular?… No
It is chopped deli ingredients that may look like mush to some. Yes, you get a taste of everything in one bite but in all honesty having everything chopped makes it extremely messy.
If in the area with some extra time and I have a taste for a sandwich I will probably return. Will I have the chop it? Undecided.
Just A Note:
There is pretty much always a line. It moves quick so if you want to give them a try,...
Read moreSaw this place on Instagram and we decided to visit on a Friday night at 10 pm. It's a large typicallcorner store/bodega/deli that stores lots of beverages and snacks on the shelves. We walked in and thought there was no line, but quickly realized there were about six people ahead of us...we were ok with that because I've heard the line sometimes goes out the door! The sandwich menu offers turkey, chicken, beef, and tuna. I ordered a chopped tuna on a hero and they take a blob of mayo, lettuce, tomato (all the fixings of your choice, onions, pickles, oil and vinegar, etc) and put it on a heavy piece of wax paper then add your protein and proceed to chop it all up together with a knife. They put the chopped mixture on your bread (you can ask them to remove the middle of the bread if you want) and they escort the sandwich to the cashier who's in the front of the store. I paid $10 for my chopped tuna, but there was so much it could have easily been turned into 2 sandwiches! It was pretty good, but I don't know if I'd be willing to wait on line again for almost 30 minutes for a sandwich. It was fun watching the process, definitely going to attempt to make my own version at home. they make other sandwiches that aren't chopped and the selection of cheeses and meats is simple but impressive enough to create your very own unique...
Read moreTo true Fort Greene Brooklynites this place is called "Lauros". When I was a kid in the late 80's & you wanted a sandwich, especially when you were going on a school trip... this is where everyone went. They've been around forever and after living in a few areas of Brooklyn but visiting several, they are still the best place to get a deli sandwich. Most of the time there is a line for sandwiches so be prepared, but trust and believe it is well worth it. They are not cheap with your ingredients or toppings & you can get your sandwich regular or "chopped". (Chopped means they take the ingredients of your sandwich turkey, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, mayo etc... and expertly chop & mix it up in front of you before putting it on the bread. If you don't want bread you can put it in a container.) It costs about $8 and you won't be disappointed. I don't know the last time I didn't get my sandwich chopped. It makes such a difference in the way the ingredients meld together & I always tip them because they do...
