Retro Braids NYC — Attraction in New York

I was looking for a braider in NYC and landed on Retro Braids after reading the reviews, looking through the company's Instagram, and seeing how fair the prices are given the positive reviews and the fact that the braider, Shamara, provides the hair.

I'm beyond grateful that I chose this place! Shamara is the sweetest, most professional and talented braider. She really listens to her clients, and you can tell she's passionate about what she does and keeping people's hair healthy. She also has a calming, pleasant presence and is a joy to chat with.

The first time I got my hair done at Retro Braids, I got the Bohemian braids in the medium size. They were so pretty and lasted a little over two months. When I took the braids out, my hair was still soft and moisturized. Of course I did my part to keep the braids looking good and my hair and scalp healthy, but Shamara's careful, knowledgeable braiding set the perfect launch pad for two months' worth of healthy wear. She also gave good advice for upkeep.

The second time I went, which was a few weeks ago, I got the Bohemian braids in the size smedium. I told Shamara that I was going to be a maid of honor at an upcoming wedding, so she gave the hairstyle a little extra zhuzh, which I appreciated. The braids were absolutely gorgeous, and the wavy hair she added was so full; I've gotten so many compliments, and I feel super confident.

Retro Braids is the first braiding place I've tried in NYC, and I can't emphasize how happy I am that I've had such a great experience. I'm looking forward to booking my next...

I love coming to get my hair done by Shamara she’s the best hands down. She’s quick, very knowledgeable and lets you know everything from the state of your hair, if changes need to be done or if you’ll need more hair than anticipated. She’s very polite and welcoming. I had the pleasure of being serviced by her twice and both experiences left me speechless! I’m very particular on who I let do my hair and when I say I just felt I was in good hands I knew I found my forever braider.

She’s so passionate about what she does she makes you want to try different styles. The QUALITY of the hair she uses is top notch! The hair DOES NOT MATTE. Shamara goes over with you what to add to the hair and what not to add to have longevity with your style.

What I also like is that my you don’t leave her chair with a headache because your braids are too tight. She’s braids fast and neat but not too tight where you have to take an Advil just so you can get sleep at night. I’ve been there before with other braiders but not with Shamara. The braids also can be styled multiple ways you don’t have to wait till they loosen to style that’s what else I love about how she braids.

Searching for a stylist I bumped into this talented lady’s hair page. I gave her a call before booking so I could consult with her about my desired style, she was very nice easy going and respectful. I booked right then and there. On the day of my appointment all went well. A Pro for me was the fact that she assessed my hair and came up with a suggestion to tweak the hairstyle to make sure the health of my hair was priority. She’s well experienced. Love that! My style came out great and lasted long, funds well spent.
