Flying Dutchman Winery — Attraction in Newport

The server was incredibly rude during our time.

We went to the flying Dutchman winery planning on getting a tasting on a fine afternoon. In fact, we planned our entire day around a relaxing afternoon tasting some good wine.

Within 3 minutes, we experienced enough rudeness that we decided to leave.

We walked in to wait to be served in a line only to have the server yell, "OUT THE WAY, COMING THROUGH" in a very rude tone while we were minding our business in line.

We disregarded it, even though he could have kindly said excuse me.

Then when we were at the front of the line, we mentioned that our hotel had said that we could get complimentary tastings... He rudely said, "We are not affiliated with them and can't control what they tell you." And then walked to the next customer without giving us time to respond.

We would have happily paid for the tasting had the server just said nicely that sorry, but they are no longer doing that promotion.

Instead he just rudely scowled at us and didn't even give us a chance to order.

So we left. Will never come back. And are leaving with a terrible taste in our mouth.

We come to this area often and will never visit this winery. You go to a winery to have a relaxed and pleasant experience; not to be yelled at and...

To start with, when we walked in there was no one behind the bar. We waited inside for nearly ten minutes before someone finally showed up. Only my fiance' was sampling as I was driving. However, she offered me a sip of her sample. Immediately upon her doing so, the man behind the bar was clearly offended she did that as to imply he was losing business because she offered to let me have a taste. Then without asking, he aggressively put an empty glass in front us and put a splash into it and then walked away from us. Due to his actions and demeanor, we did not even sample it. If we want to share our sample with one person or three, that is our prerogative and not for anyone else to dictate especially since we are paying for it. I don't know who the person behind the bar was, but he was not friendly, did not engage in any conversation at all and was just rude. Although the wine was good, I would NEVER buy anything from this winery. Unfortunately for the winery, we would have purchased a bottle, but due to the employee's actions, it didn't happen. Horrible!!! We basically bought a $50 bottle of grape colored water!! I taste 2 wines which they charge $4 each for. I ended up buying the Pinot Noir which they deduct the price of the tasting if you purchase the wine. We popped it open when we got back to our rental because we are on vacation. It was NOT the wine I tasted earlier. At first taste my husband and I looked at each other and said, “ this is water”. How do you not know what you are selling. I’m not going back to ask them for a refund or to make it better. I don’t have time for that! We leave tomorrow. So if you like to waste your money and like NA wine, this place is for you!
