The Rosecliff is an absolutely majestic and beautifully designed mansion in Newport Rhode Island. During our honeymoon, which took place in the fall of 2018, I brought and treated myself and my wife for a visit and self guided tour of the Rosecliff. During our visit, we learned that the Rosecliff was built from 1898-1902, designed by the distinguished architect, Stanford White of the architectural firm, Mckim, Mead & White and it served as a major residence to Theresa Fair Oelrichs, an American socialite, daughter of James Graham Fair, a multimillionaire silver miner, and spouse to Hermann Oelrichs, a successful shipping magnate. Today, the Rosecliff serves as a historic house museum, listed on the National Register Of Historic Places and has been designated as a US National Historic Landmark District Contributing Property. What my wife and I loved about the Rosecliff was its distinct exterior facade, especially its white architectural terracotta tiles, as well as the mansion’s numerous furnishings and well-crafted large size fireplaces. Our favorite part of the Rosecliff is its magnificent ballroom. We learned that the ballroom was by Theresa Fair Oelrichs to host many lavish balls and celebrations. The ballroom has also been prominently featured in many films ranging from “The Great Gatsby” “True Lies” “Amistad” and the “High Society.” When vacationing in Newport Rhode Island, both my wife and I highly recommend that everyone stop by and visit this outstanding historic attraction!!!

We were here for flower show. Parking down the street with the trolly shuttle was great. Upon arrival that were terrific flower displays out front. Exactly what we expected. Little gardens displayed with assorted designs and plants, absolutely perfect - pretty. the vendors out front were good. Heirloom seeds, pottery with hydrangea motifs, topiary. Rose cliff was lovely. Flowers inside were nice. Out back was the beautiful view of the ocean and many vendors. Some were "related". Beautiful garden wind catchers and garden ornaments. Outdoor furniture, bird houses, some really nice displayes on patio. but there were a lot more vendors " unrelated" like dresses and hand bags and jewelry. Nice sure but i went to see flowers and flower displayes and garden - flower ideas. So i enjoyed it but was a little let down not as much actual "flower " related "stuff" as i had hopped for.

I'm generally not into visiting these famous mansions except for the history they invoke, but my daughter loves them so we went here and the Vanderbilt mansion, which is more famous but I liked this one much better. For one thing, there wasn't a lot of construction going on. It was $25 a person, so it was not cheap. There were some very lovely things to see. The rich are different than you and I! The gift shop was small and we didn't find anything worth getting in it. There must be a lot of rooms they don't let the public see cause for a mansion, we really didn't see that many rooms, so I'm not sure why, but areas of the home are cut off. At the Vanderbilt mansion, for example, we got to see the kitchen and get an idea of a servants life. This house, if it had a kitchen, was not open on the tour.

Wasn't my favorite of the Newport summer homes. While the tour gives a good overview of the house and history it's less in depth and doesn't show the kitchens or many bedrooms ( many have been turned into an art exhibit). Additionally the tour focuses alot on the locations current use as a wedding venue and art exhibit really detracting from the "historic" nature of the property. All in all its nice that this has movie history and an audio tour, but the fact it seems to be one giant wedding prom is wierd. And the conversion into an art gallery seems to detract from historic value. It's a very diffrent experience from the other homes you may find that you really enjoy it I however did not and would recommend the other mansions first.
