i was stationed in charleston, aboard the uss charles f. adams ddg-2. i so much remember pier papa (P) and i also remember entering the harbor passing the docked mine sweepers... there were a few times i went to the base pub. was ok. the bands played too much beatles crap... lol
i really enjoyed downtown charleston. every time i had the weekend off, a few of us would rent and share a room across from the citadel... the managers only request was that all of us didn't use the pool at the same time since only one paid for the room...............(too funny)
i very much remember the three nags saloon where they had a record player and you could use both their records or ur own
i saw man walk on the moon in shorty's pub, on the strip, just outside the base gate...
another memorable moment was when we saw a hells angels girl walk by...my friends said look at that...i said probly a lesbian.................she decked me............................OMG
finally..............for years i drove limousine in nyc for nbc/universal/the today show.... one of my passengers was from charleston.... i was remenicing when she said that it was her dad who owned all of the taxi cabs outside of the base gate.

Read moreA nice memorial that is very informative. It is on the edge of the North Charleston Riverfront Park and designed creatively. You get a feeling for the real people that served there. What was as interesting as the actual memorial was the residential area for officers. The housing there was started in 1909. The Admiral's resident and the Commandant's quarters which also housed the administration building were both mansions. They are started to refurbish all these older homes. The one that looks complete looks fabulous from the outside. It looks like it will be used for events. I rode my bicycle all around the area several times. It was a great place to ride.
