This was a really neat museum to visit! We already had the state park pass, so we figured we may as well check this place out, and I'm glad we did. They do a great job of making sure items are labeled and there are stories to read about many of them. It helps you understand the lives Buffalo Bill and his family lived when you have that extra information.
I really like how beautifully the rooms are decorated with period accurate pieces of furniture. It really helps create an impulsive experience. The photos are also really cool to see. I loved the large posters for thr wild west show in the barn.
They also have some interactive stuff, like being able to laso in the barn and a saddle kids can climb onto. They also had several carriages and a covered wagon inside. They were awesome and in great condition for their age. You don't realize how big the wheels on those old wagons were. Hard to believe pioneers traveled so far in them.
My favorite part was the house tour and my kids loved the spring house. They also loved watching the cows nextdoor.
Overall, this museum is reasonably priced and a fun stop if you're in the area. Give it a...
Read moreI really just stopped here on a whim on my way through Nebraska, so judging on that level, it's a great roadside pit stop! The way there is very well marked from the highway, you don't even need your gps. Cost for an out-of-towner is $10, $2 for the house tour itself and $8 for the state park fee. The mansion is a fun bit of history even for those not particularly into Buffalo Bill Cody or even wild west culture. It was fun to look around the house and learn about the show and the people in it. Some of the top floors have more Wild West Show artifacts in it, like a proper museum, and there's even a video that plays in the back room. It's overall kindof of small, I can't imagine all the people fitting in it like some of the pictures suggest. The tour also includes the huge barn with show posters and wagons. I really liked the photo gallery along the back wall. Past the barn are some bison, if you care to see...
Read moreWe stopped by around 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday 9/20/22 it was eerie because we (my dad and I) were the only ones there.
Sad no one with the parks service was on staff. The house and barn were locked up. We were hoping there was an admission fee and we could get a brochure or/& a map of the grounds.
Worth a stop, but IDK if the required permit is necessary - especially since there was not much explanating the homestead. There are printed notes displayed on each window (with drapes pulled closed) describing what was on the other side... like "Buffalo Bill's room" or "women's parlor".
On the other hand the gentleman caretaker at the park (about 5 minutes drive away) with the trains was/is EXTREMELY knowledgeable, friendly and informative. He even suggested some other things...
